Default 2005 A4 shift cable issue

The shifter-to-cable bushing on my 2005 A4 broke. I got the Dorman 14041 bushing kit and installed the bushing. The cable was very rigid, which is necessary for it to be able to be pushed when going into park (as opposed to pulled when coming out of park). When I was pulling the cable end up to connect to the ball on the end of the shifter, I heard a pop and the rigidness went away. There is a cable guide that the thick chrome metal part of the cable moves through. The guide is plastic and has a bell housing shaped end on it. It does not appear to be broken, but it has come loose from the shifter cable bracket inside the tunnel that keeps everything in place. I've tried to push it back onto the round piece of the bracket, but it's a small opening and I have large hands so I'm having trouble getting enough grip and leverage. Does this bell housing end snap back onto the round end of the bracket or did it break? Has anyone else done this? Does anyone have a broken cable laying around to see if this piece will come apart and go back together? I have attached photos to illustrate.
