shifter not working
Before I bring it to dealer I wanted to see if by some miracle it is just something small, so here is my statement/question:
I was driving about 40 minutes, pulled over for a minute (not sure if I put it in park or just held foot on brake) when I was accelerating I heard a pop, I assumed it was a piece of gravel hitting the bottom of my car. I drove about 20 more minutes and when I tried to put it in reverse, the shifter was free moving, almost like it wasn’t connected to anything. I could not shift out of D. so I drove home and checked the rear linkage where the plastic knuckle connects to tranny and it is connected. However I had to turn car off while still in park.
So my question is: any suggestions…??? I’m really hoping they won’t have to break into tranny.
Also, it seemed like the left side console was really warm. warmer than usual.....
Thanks
John
would these cables (linkage) be visible from underneath the car? I know where the "knuckle" connects to the shifter on the tranny, it's still connnected. is there a way to troubleshoot from that to the place where console shifter is?
Here are the instructions for replacing the cable, just to give you an idea of what's involved:

I will try to post pics.
i know that this isn't probably the time but I've used dielectric grease inside my door pads and i just opened them up after several months and there was a greenish tint all in the grease!...it even says on the package that it "repels" water. it's called dielectric cable connector protector
AS always, thx for this forum and to ALL you guys's help

While you're in there, it would be great if you could take and post (for eternity) lots of pics of everything for us to refer to in talking about these things. If you can, great, if not that's okay too. Good luck. I will be following this to see what happens.
$80+ plus tax for cable (as they do not sell only the ball piece)
$500 labor!!!!!
isn't there some simple way to modify and connect the shifter to end of cable so that I do not have to have the entire cable replaced??

when I was lifting the cable to take it off the old shifter and attach to the new one, I heard a pop, I managed to squeeze my phone in and get a pic of the break.
from the loop in the pictures on this thread, that's just a few inches back. I could reach my hand in and feel it but it was too tight for me to be able to squeeze the clips and pull it out of the bracket. since it just looked like a guide, I hoped it would be ok anyway.
I put in the new shifter and put everything back together and it started, and shifted no problem a couple times. so I buttoned up the rest of it and tried one more time and it didn't work. I guessed this broken piece was the culprit and after reading this thread I'm pretty sure. Now it has tension on it in park (if I go to shift out of park then it springs out when I push the button on the shifter) but when I shift between gears it's loose. What's worse is the car won't even start. when I hit the start button you can hear the shifter solenoid kick in and back out really fast (I assume that's what it's doing, it just clicks twice). This just seemed like a guide tube, can this really be the problem? is there a better product in aftermarket I could replace this crappy OEM cable with? if there's anybody around that's actually changed this cable can you tell me how laborous it will be?
I've already noticed the parts about raising the car, removing the middle exhaust tube and channel cover, but if I try to fix this myself is there another potential "gotcha" of a part that'll break if I sneeze while replacing the cable?
I noticed other info in a C5 thread but since my car is an '05 C6 I thought this would be the better place to ask for help, if I'm in the wrong spot a pointer there would be nice also.
thanks in advance for any help.
I tested everything out and I CAN shift in and out of park no problem, but I may have another problem.
I only attached the shifter assembly and put a couple nuts on it to hold it in place when I tested so MAYBE this issue will resolve itself when I finish putting everything back together, but before I go through the effort I was HOPING somebody here may have some insight.
I can shift in and out of park fine, but there's no catch before or after neutral. In other words, the shifter will freely float between drive and neutral and even though you have to push the button to go to reverse, there's no resistance when you do.
not a major deal but the big problem is that it won't go into reverse or drive just by moving the indicator to that position. when I go from neutral to drive, it stays in neutral till I shift to 3 then back to drive and won't go to reverse unless I go to park then back to reverse.
Did I break something else? did I get a bad shifter assembly? anybody have anything that can help me out here?
