Default 305 35 18 MT or 315 30 18 MT

I'm fixing to order a set of Mickey Thompson ET Street II for a set of 18x10.5 C5 Z06 rims I have. I've got a C6 Z06 with stock gears, Katech ZR1 clutch and 550 rwhp/500 rwtq. 305 35 18 26.4 inches tall 315 30 18 25.5 inches tall. Which tire would be best for running the quarter mile?

Go with the taller side wall of the 305 tire. My car used the MT ET Street II 305/35/18 size for its 9 second runs...in fact, it's my everyday tire.

I like the shorter tire to give me more gear to get off the line. Most of the fast guys are running 275/40/17's, about 25.5, I'm running 315/35/17's also 25.5 and I like them a lot.

I did alot of research before posting a thread but it seems to go back and forth between the two sizes. I would run the 275 40 17 but 17" wheels won't fit over my STOPTECH brakes. Hmmm still on the fence on which size to order.

It's a tough call and might come down to what gears you're running in the rear (and in the trans).
I know the 305s will fit that 10.5" rim better but the 315s will go on there as well.

3.42 gears, stock trans ratios. Just wondering which tire is going to give me the best ET.

If best ET is your goal get the shortest tires you can. Gears are your friend for getting it moving off the line. The fastest bolt on guys use 25.5" (275/40/17) and 17x26" bias tires.

I recommend the 315/35/17's but some guys say the 275/40/17's are better...personally I have better luck launching hard on the wider tire.

If you aren't going to drive on the street I recommend Hoosiers. If you have to drive to the track I recommend Mickey Thompson.

Thanks Joe. I'm gonna try out the 315's. Are you running them on a 10.5 rim?

I'm running them on 9.5 c5Z06 fronts.

You might also throw up this question in the C6Z section, some hot and heavy drag racers over there, and get a 2nd opinion. I know a lot of those guys swear by the 275's...but I have better luck with the 315's.

I asked in the C6Z section this morning with not one reply. I can't run 17" because my brakes. I'm refering to 18" tires i'm afraid the 315 30 18 doesn't have enough sidewall.

I missed your comment on brakes.

I've got 100 hp less than you so I'm looking for all the gear I can get which is why I love the short tires. That might not be applicable to you...I'll be interested to see what the Z06 guys say. I know Rattt G was using super tall 345/18 M&H's and launching off the rev limiter to get 1.3 60 foots on NOS. I also know a guy at PBIR was running them in his stock Z06 and turning high 11's...he got some 315/17's like I have and ran 11.3's. The tall 345's were too much for stock Z06 power.

You're in between those two extremes.

I like your "ttt" reply over in the Z section.

For what it's worth, I went from 40 sidewall to 35 sidewall and get much better traction from the 315's than I did the 275's. Significantly better traction despite the shorter sidewall.

I'll follow your thread over there, let's see what some of the fast guys there say.

If you hook, the 315-30-18 will yield the better results, again only if you hook.
If you had 3.90s or 4.10 gears I might suggest the 305-35s instead.

on both counts.
Hoosier also makes a 315-30-18 drag radial, that might be just the ticket for your needs as it should be a bit stickier (and slightly less costly/lighter as well) than Mickey Thompsons of the same size yet it will still give you the more preferable overall diameter (only possible issue is that they are listed as slightly taller than the M/Ts even though they are labeled as exact the same size...that happens in some cases). But again, the Hoosiers do wear out faster as well.

Thanks for all for the input fellas. Ended up ordering the 305 35 18 MT's from Jegs. I'll let you know how it turns out after this weekend. Last weekend went 11.21 129 mph running my 345 25 20 Nitto Invos. I had to roll it off the line and leave the TC on to get a run without smokin the tires. Looking for sum low 10's this coming weekend with sum stickies.

I'm not entirely sure that 18" drag radials alone will shave off a full second but you should definitely be well into the 10s with them.
Good luck.

Was also only my 6th time down the track in my Z so i'm sure the nut behind the wheel could use some tuning as well.

11.2 on street tires is quite impressive then!

True, tires plus improved driving can definitely chop huge chunks off of your ET.

I think I'm too late, but Hoosier makes a 335/30r18 tire if you need an 18" wheel to clear the brakes and has a little more sidewall than the 315, RatttG has had success running them on his c6z with c5z rear wheels.

Went to the track yesterday and went 10.7123 @ 131.97 mph. I'm stoked about getting into the 10's. The MT's hooked up great! I just need to work on my launch as the car was almost stalling off the line. 1.65 60ft.
