Default 2nd to 3rd shift problems on my 2008z

I know I read something awhile back. Car has 900 miles and when getting on the gas...I get stuck trying to put it in 3rd gear. Does not want to take the shift. What is the fix? Am I doing something wrong? Seems odd that I cant shift in a fast fashion in all gears except for 2nd to 3rd. This only happens at higher rpm's when trying to have some fun....

Try this - do the shift without putting your fingers around the **** - just push the stick forward with your palm and let the springs push the stick into the right place. I'll bet that does the trick - at least try it before you tell me I'm crazy . . .

Just because you answered this question correctly doesn't mean you're not crazy, you were crazy long before this post!

Allan, is correct, do not guide the stick or grab it. It doesn't need to be muscled into gear. Push with your palm, pull with your finger tips.

Default Well known problem!

All Corvettes shift that way. There are different transmission fluid that some have purchased (Royal Purple) and it seems to help some. That is just the way the Corvettes are. I had a 350Z and S2000 that were extremely smooth and currently have a Porsche Cayman S that shifts smoother than any car I have owned. Corvettes are just very notchy cars.

the harder you try to shift the harder it resists. Just "guide" it with an open palm, don't "slam" it.

Ever since I learned this trick a few years ago I haven't missed a shift since.

Absolutley! Technique has a lot to do with the shift idiosynchrosies of the Z car's tranny.

On my 08 Zo6, rarely will this happen, and when and if it does occur it's because of my lack of finessing the shifter.

I had the same problem with mine, which was really annoying when it caused me to miss half of my shifts going from 2nd to 3rd and into 4th going down the track.

Tranny will also smooth out with some k's on her.

Mine improved gradually after some K's on her, and was a non-issue after I had about 10K.

Wow. I'd been having some trouble with mine, especially going into 5th, and just chalked it up to 6060 syndrome. I tried your suggestion last night and it made a world of difference. I guess I must have been ham-fisting it. For some reason I've never seen this mentioned before. Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken...in one of the Vette magazines they addressed shifting technique in the C6 based Vettes as being a culprit for mis-shifts. So fine tuning your shifting technique.

I found the rubber sound deading material that lays on top of the shifter, just under the leather boot was torn. It didnt happen all the time which was confusing. It felt like there was some spongy resistance when I would go to third, especially when shifting fast on the track. I took the console apart and found the piece of rubber was torn, removed it 4 months ago and have not had the probelm since. Although the interiorn noise is way worse without that piece.

They should put that shifting technique in the owners manual. Tried it today and it works great. I had been trying to speed shift like a old muncie 4 speed with no luck. Thanks for the information!!

Finesse is the word. Its been that way since the C4s went to a 6 speed in 1989. Too many ham fisted drivers trying to jam third like they would a 4 speed and miss the gate. Just imagine having a slotted shift gate on the console like the old Ferrari's used to have and you can understand why slam and bang don't work.

Chuck at COW told me there is a clutch postion indicator switch on '08s that prevents power shifting... it is a new feature associated with the new '08 transmission . PM Chuck for the full details.
