How many times did you do the Ranger method and did it clear things up? Could be the master cylinder, does the pedal feel any different? Have you tried actually bleeding it at the slave to see if it helps?

Is the fluid level in your reservoir changing at all? Dropping, particularly? Any fluid under the car or seeping out of the bottom of the bellhousing?

One thought is that you've got a leak somewhere that would allow air to be introduced into the system, by which you are somehow purging with a few pedal presses. This, of course, would mean fluid underneath.

When does the pedal feel soft? It could be the seals in the master cylinder are failing.
