WHY?

Regarding T-stat cost, I was very surprised about the low cost of the Lingenfelter ones, as my 170 deg. T-stat for my TT Flex cost $75.

For those who want a spare stock T-stat, the cost (which includes the housing and bib) is about $50.00 shipped. So, if you modify a stock one one with the Lingenfelter bulb, You still are in for CHEAP!

Drove the Vette on a cruise this evening... 150+ miles with my Mighty Mouse 160 deg T-stat mod. NO CODES!!!! ECM is stock. Coolant temps varied between 163 & 171.

Think some of the code/limp mode problems people have been experiencing ( when T-stat gasket hasn't failed) could be air in the coolant system after T-stat change. This time I ran heater for about 20 minutes after install last week, and also added fluid to the coolant tank a couple times, even though it appeared to be full.

I am installing the LMR piece today, I track my car so I want no compromises. It is an impressive piece for sure over the plastic thermo housing.

Not a big fan of any plastic in a cooling system.

I installed my LMR thermostat, my Lingenfelter had not failed, but they said it was a bear to get off of the car, it was severely stuck on.

The LMR piece is very nice and a good upgrade over stock. I am not a fan of plastic thermo housings, it dresses up the engine well too. Thanks to Higg's for again helping me find the HP tuners setting for the thermostat to be set at 160.

I am glad this issue was pointed out before I went to the track next weekend, it would suck to be in limp mode on the track.

By the way Mightymouse I already have the DeWitts all aluminum radiator, so I am on my way to getting a really solid cooling system in this car.

My LMR 160 stuck shut causing 260* water temp, engine shutdown and a host of related issues including flat bedding the car home.
Replaced factory 194 and no problem.

LMR - Do you have a stat that is set for 180 degrees instead of 160? For my use, 160 is just too low. I tried the Summit 180 but it did not look like their 160 stat which is supposed to be good in the OEM housing.

I understand some forum members were able to transplant just the bulb from a different stat into the OEM one. I am not sure I could successfully do that kind of surgery.

Are you using a 160 thermostat now? Why is a 160 too low?

I currently have the stock 190 stat in the C7.

Prior, in a C6, I tried the 160, 170 and 180 and stock 190. For how I use it, the stock 160 was just too low. In the winter, I got insufficient heat in the cabin. I hear on the C7, it can trigger a CEL unless you get a tune. 180 seemed to function the best for me. YRMV.

MightyMouse - thanks for posting the update. I just installed the Jet 180 today. Not sure if Jet makes the 170 and 160 too for Summit. A couple of forum member told me they have over 20K miles on the 170 without tearing the gasket. So I figure I would give the 180 a shot. Keeping the OEM in case it fails.

I could not figure out how to swap bulbs. Looks like they are pressed into the plate with the seal. No YouTube I could find. Besides, I wanted to keep my stock 190 to put it back in case the 180 did not work out. But I did find the whole OEM stat and housing assembly for $44 shipped if I ever want to try that bulb swap.

I'll attest you are quite correct about needing to change the fans in the tune. As soon as the car comes to a stop, the temps go right up to 190, and shortly after the car start moving and air flows, it goes back to ~180. Even with a Dewitts radiator. But no tune is in my future.

I did not see a 180 option for Mishimoto, or anything else that looks like it had the seal pressed in like the OEM stat does.

To all other forum members, if you go on to the retailers web sites like Rock Auto, Advanced Auto, they list 180 "OEM" replacement stats for the C7 apps now. Be aware these all are a mistake will will not fit our thermostat housing with the way the springs are held in place. I am not sure why so many retailers seem to list ones that have no way of fitting.

It was just a matter of time...and Sunday was the day. Thanks to Mightymouse for the "fix". Cobbled my OEM and aftermarket stats together and back on the road.
