Some cool looking cars. Would be a great ride for a track junkie. WOuld be really cool if you could make it street legal.
The question is...Can you get one?

There are some around but they tend to be pretty expensive.
I saw a Fabcar on one of the race car for sale sites and it was $185k, that was for a Porsche engine version, a Chebby might be cheaper...
One of my designers did the Fabcar. He said that when they were doing it they were thinking of a street version too. the problem was that the ground clearance for the track car is about two inches. If you raise it up enough to drive on the street he said it really messed up all the geometry. For that reason they canned the idea of doing a "streetable" version.
So no, you really can't just take one off the track and drive it on the street. It probably wouldn't be able to get out of your driveway. You would have to make new uprights at all four corners or you would have to relocate all of the suspension links... Almost easier to start from scratch...
That is one of my pet peeves about the current endurance racing rules. They allow things that if you don't do them you will get hammered on the track, but if you do them, the car isn't by any stretch of the imagination "streetable"... Ground clearance and turning circle are just two of the more obvious ones...
There are a number of kit cars, like the Superformance GT40 or the RCR kits that would make a really cool track car and could be street driven. Not cheap, but not really expensive by any stretch...

If you're looking for a great track/race car that's similar in appearance and reasonably priced ($75K) - check out the Diasio 962R Here's a video from Sebring - video.

the high point they are at now. Information I've read has been
positive, I wonder why they are not seen more often?

Eh..
GTP cars were always faster than DPs anyway..
I have driven that one on the street a little bit, you have to think when entering/leaving some parking lots, but overall it is good.
We "solve" the suspension geometry issue by using the C5 suspension so that it works in the range of street rideheights. In a few months I will be doing 4000 street miles in it, most of them at night, and my largest worry is the potential damage from a dead animal/tire recap that I cant quite clear.

You guys beat me to the punch. I am enjoying watching the race so much today that I had to take my own "Daytona Prototype" out for a little spin just now.
I don't know why we don't see more teams racing them over here - in Europe they clean up pretty regularly.

They don't fit LMP or DP regs, and the manufacturer lacks the clout needed to get a good ruleset for GT I am betting. (Essentially, I am betting they don't meet production #s, or if they do they would be heavily restricted) I remember a few years ago a few ran in the Grand Am or USRRC series after the breakup of IMSA and such, but IIRC, they made them run tiny inlet restrictors that kept them from being competitive.
So the same as the Mongoose car, it gets religated to Time Trials, Open Road Challenges, the Ultimate Track Car Challenge, etc.. For those amateur events, most people I would guess find it a lot easier to justify an expensive cool street car and if you want to race a car you pick one that's half as much and races against three times the number of people.

One Lap of America (www.onelapofamerica.com) It's an event where we will drove from track to track on the road competing in time trial events over the coruse of a week, the 08 event starts and finishes with skid pad competitions at the Tire Rack in South Bend Indiana, and hits Road America, Mid America (Iowa), Texas World Speedway, a drag strip in Houston, No Problem Raceway in Louisiana, Carolina Motorsports Park (South Carolina) BMW Test center (South Carolina) Virginia International Raceway, BeaveRun (PA).
No support vehicles, only one spare tire per tire size, tires must be 140 rating or better and from Tire Rack.

I'm not crazy at all about the DP cars. The only drivers that seem to be impressed by them are the NASCAR drivers. They're ugly to boot. I'd love to see this kind of driver participation in the Le Mans series instead.

Ah, those '80's IMSA GTP's...
Is that an Eagle street replica or genuine P-car converted? (I almost commited to an Eagles several years back, less engine.) Seeing your ride makes me wonder if I should regret not doing so. In any event, totally
edit - I think I found it... http://corvettegtp.info/subReplica3.html

The Mongoose website says that the gtp has a 4 spd auto trans? did I miss something? That's pretty lame if it does, That HAS to be a mistake or omission of the manual, right?
