Default C5/C6 wheelbase: Reason?

Just curious if there's a performance/handling reason for the "long" C5/C6 wheelbase (relative to a C3/C4), or is it merely a necessity to package the rear transaxle.

Thanks.

A wider track should reduce weight transfer in a corner, allowing the car to use more of the grip in the tires. Also, it seems like a longer wheel base makes a car more stable at the limit of grip.
