Default So rumor has it.....LS6 dead

So rumor has it that the LS6 is no longer available and not made as a crate by GM anymore. A couple of racers report difficult time getting them but since this is a recent issue new old stock LS6's can be found hidden around. So does anyone know the real story? Is the LS6 really NLA? If so then the LS3 is the next obvious choice but racers blow these up without drysumps. So why is the LS6 so bullitproof and the
LS3 a timebomb? Do we need to wait for the LS4 before GM makes a decent motor we can beat on? It sounds to me that the GS with LS3 and drysump are really GM's way of putting a bandaid on the LS3 instead of fixing the problem. So school me...thanks!

GM Performance rep told me about 2-3 months ago that there is not a shortage. He claims the vender that supplied the harmonic balancers went bankrupt. This is supposed to be causing the supply problem. I hope he is right

I hope they are all gone. That would make the one sitting in the crate in my basement worth a lot more.

Why would anybody want to downgrade to an LS4? My work car has this engine, transverse-mounted, and while it's nicer than a V6 it's no substitute for an LS6 or even an LS1.

Man, guess I better start rebuilding my old "spare" engine before the parts dry up.

Are we talking a complete crate engine here or just long blocks ? My local stealership parts dept reports that they can still get longblocks but that the crate engine has been deleted from the listings.

Why would they delete it if they sell a decent amount? I mean they sell all the other ancient crate motors?

That was such a great motor...loved the way it reved, sounded and it was bullet proof. Mine had 65+ track days and is now giving it's 4th owner track days after 10 years. Just amazing, can only hope my LS7 holds up nearly as well.

Tom,
The LS2 already has the 243 heads, all you need are the valves and intake.

I have heard that it's getting tougher to find the LS6 long blocks, it would really suck if GM discontinued it. The LS6 is ol' reliable and for $3500 it's the best value around, plus no need for dry sump or anything. I know GM is shifting it's focus more on the LS3 which does make some awesome power, but it also requires more work to get it to survive.

They usually tend to blow holes in blocks, wipe out heads, cam, crank and all kinds of stuff.

I scrapped my see thru block for $50.00 at the local recycle yard after I took off some sensors and such.

There was a ton of Caddy long block crate motors last year, just swap the oil pan out. Same motor!

I agree, It would be njce to know what really is happening. Complete crate motors are few and far between but if the long blocks are still going to be around then that is still a viable solution. Obviously the Caddy motor is the same - the oil pan but even those as complete motors are not around. You can still get LS1 crate motors, I wonder why not the LS6?

Phoenix just rebuilt mine as there were no LS6 crates available. Would have been a lower cost option for sure. It would be nice to have an official answer on this. I agree it makes no sense they would stop making a top seller.

I got them to quote on one a coupe of years back, and they said they wanted their money up front before they'd ship it. And I'm talking about real money, no credit cards.

I think that's a Rick Hendrick dealership, if my memory serves me right.

Superior Chrevrolet is Jeff Kopp and Mike McGinley who have been racing AS and T1 for years. They are good guys. I bought my LS6 from them about four months ago and they are great. They have always done a great job for me whether shipping product or delivering it trackside at the Runoffs.

They do take credit cards, too. At least that is how I paid.

I need to call Jeff and order a couple of axles....

Oli
