Formula 1 goes public!
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal today, CVC Capital Partners is floating an IPO on formula 1 in Singapore for $2.5 Billion.....
(You know, just in case any of you guys want to own a piece of it)

The WSJ would seem to be at least a month behind on this
http://www.insideline.com/ferrari/ec...po-for-f1.html
And only a part of CVC's shares would be made available so it's not really "going public" in the sense that folks tend to think about it.

So the trick is in hitching your star to Bernie's That's what the F1 teams do. That's why, despite the occasional public whine from team X or team Y, they all end up falling in line with Bernie's wishes. Simply put, he makes them lots and lots of money.
CVC hitched their wagon to Bernie, too. Remember that Bernie is fundamentally an employee of CVC - he "CEOs" F1. They give him pretty much free reign over their F1 investment (that's all it is to CVC) because he's friggin' good at it. Bernie has only a 5+% stake in CVC so, aside from his annual salary, he makes money when CVC makes money.
The common misconception is that Bernie "runs F1" and while things can give that appearance, it's really not the case. That's the FIA's job (but he certainly has a lot of influence is how the FIA goes about it since he makes THEM money, too.) When you read/hear Bernie referred to as F1's "ringmaster" that's much more accurate.

"A Formula One racing CEO Bernie Ecclestone – Ecclestone (Bernie Ecclestone) had said last month that he had no intention to sell the 5.3% held a Formula One racing stock, according to the CVC’s plan, he will remain CEO"
I should have said he has a 5.3% interest in F1, not CVC.

Bernie controls 5.3%
The family trust owns 8.5% but Bernie has no control over it whatsoever - an important distinction. In fact, the issue of his control over the trust is what he claimed was the basis for the alleged blackmail case last year (any hint that he had control over the trust could make trouble with the British tax folks and could lead to the trust being taxed to the tune of some 800 million British pounds.) The term "family trust" is misleading in this case.
