Lost my Brother this morning
I received a call around 3 AM and my SIL told me my brother had passed.
She called at about 2:30 and told me I needed to go to KU Med Center in KC. But we just had a snow storm yesterday and there was no way I could have gotten there in any reasonable timeframe.
So like I say about a half hour later she called me and gave me the news.
He died of liver failure as he had Hepatitis C. He got it years ago when he was young running with a bad crowd and doing drugs. The thing is though he didn't run with them for long, maybe a year at the very most and only did the drugs a couple times, so he swears, and I believe him. In his life I never knew of him to even smoke MJ, but he was a drinker which made his condition deteriorate. He has been totally free of any substance for over 5 years but he couldn't shake the inevitable.
He has been at KU Med center for the last week in hopes of receiving a transplant but a poor country boy from northern Missouri doesn't have a chance in getting one although he and his wife never gave up hope. In my heart I knew he was at KU to die. I went and seen my brother for the last time last Saturday and spent the day at his bedside. I was planning on taking the day off today to do the same. Now it's too late.
I have 3 sisters and had 2 brothers. Now both of my brothers have died and both at the age of 47. My older brother died of a staff infection.
I always tell everyone who will listen do not do drugs even once, one time can kill you. Here's the proof.
My brother Leon was the kindest gentlest person I have ever known, always had a big smile and nothing ever bothered him. His kindness often enabled people to take advantage of him but it never bothered him even when he knew it was happening. He got joy from helping people.
I wish I could have taken his place. I told him so last Saturday. His wife was by his side and by herself when he died. I hate she was alone.
Life gets harder as each year goes by it seems.
I won't say goodbye, I can't.
