Yesterday I took a day off from my Corvette projects and along with 41 other Veterans was treated to an unbelievable trip to Washington FC.Truley a day I will never forget.Our trip was sponsored by our Electric Company.I had a personal aid from the Owens Electric to assist me through the entire trip .We visited all the memorial s and and in air conditioned bus with a sirens on police escort all day.Thousands of people greeted us upon our arrival and everyone shook our hands including a few dogs.After ariveing home a line of people to greet us home took an hour to pass through.
It Truley have me faith in out great country.

Thank you for your service! One of the Smithsonian Museums in DC has an area dedicated to the momentos that have been left at the Vietnam Wall. Very moving to look at the items and read the notes left by friends and loved ones whose names are on the Wall. Every school child should be required to visit Arlington National Cemetary to see the real cost of freedom we enjoy. Just my opinion.

Very true I made a comment yesterday that the trip was free and Senator Bob Doyle who met us there said "No you men paid the price".I am a 100% dissabled Veteran due to war

I have not been back to D.C..in years..My Father was guest on a trip for vets of WWll a couple of years ago..He was a USN tail gunner on a B17..
My own experiences covered '66-73 drafted...US Army 75th ABBADABBA C co..and three years attached with macV sog... mostly incursions ..intel..Cambodia, Laos, N VN.. with indigenous people..Provided much info for ground forces that saved lives and helped the missions go better..

I didn't accompany the group butI trained-prepped at Eglin in Fla..but ended up as tac. support on the Son Tay 'excursion' november '71. Mission was a success..under 20 minutes in and out of that pow prison..eliminated all resistance.But the 60 or so American pows we intended to extract had been moved 3 days before due to expected flooding. 17 kms or so west of Hanoi...
after that raid.pow treatment improved or so I'm told..
Thank all vets for your service to our nation.It has never been easy..2 sons career USAF now and they have both been thru deployments into some s* holes....Afghanistan, Iraq,..Pakistan, Korea,
I'm not confident that those we have endeavored to rescue...deliver from oppression..liberate over the years realize the work and sacrifice America's military and citizens have provided over the years.
Consolation that our Lord knows and our efforts..expense personal..and as a nation to try and do what was right are known..and for most of us that's enough...
As a young kid, from NC, I entered the USAF. The first time I was on leave in my hometown of Rockingham, NC, while in uniform, I was spit on. I couldn't do anything to the folks that spit on me. The redneck in me wanted to throat punch every one of them, but my professionalism got a hold of me very quickly and I kept walking. This was in the time of the Vietnam conflict, so....
I have since retired a month ago from civil service from the Air Force as well. I'm tired after 41 years of being around, in and retired enlisted in the military.
Heartfelt thank you to all of the Veterans in this great country, you all make it possible for us to do the things that we love.

So happy that you were able to come up Wes. I wish I had known you were coming because I would have come out and introduced myself. I am always happy to meet other CF members espc fellow Veterans....
My VFW Post here in Dale City VA (we are only about 10mins south of DC) host a lot of these Honor Flights and Memorial Tours for older Veterans into DC.
Living very close to DC and still working everyday in the DOD, for a long time I took for granted that after so many Veterans get off of Active Duty, that's the end so to speak with them and the military - Except for memories and occasional Military member they may see in public.... Also that so many Veterans never get to see the capital and the national memorials dedicated to their sacrifices....
The camaraderie is still there for me, but for so many Veterans across this great country it must be hard to not have that feeling everyday anymore. This first hit me a few years ago when my Dad and Mom were visiting for Thanksgiving just after the Marine Corps Museum was completed.... Not to brag because I don't want to do that, but I am able to go there once a week and have lunch with co-workers, so I see it often...
Now my Dad being a Marine Corps, Vietnam Veteran wanted to see the MC Museum while he was up here, so of course I took him... He was damn near crying just seeing the place and we hadn't even begun to go thru the displays yet....
That day playing tour guide to my Dad really made an impression on me how much other Veterans still care about their service, sometimes miss that part of their lives and need to see the memorials erected to commemorate their and their friends sacrifices.
I try to participate as much as time allows in these activities now.... While I am still fairly young I hope to do as much as I can for the generations of Veterans that fought before me.... Maybe when I am older, the next generation of Veterans will afford me the same respect.
