Old is new again
California's "black plate" re-issue has become a bit hit! Since the State began making the iconic plates in 2015... more than 230-thousand have been issued...and there is a 6 month waiting list even now! That 60's look is showing up everywhere again.

In New York you can use original (or restored) vintage plates that you supply if they were issued the same year as the year of your car.
Simply put if you have a 1963 find a nice set of 1963 plates and register your car with those plates.

There are two types of "black plates". The reproduction version as shown in the OP's picture and YOM (Year Of Manufacture) plates which are the original 1963 issue plates that can be "re-registered" to your car by jumping through the appropriate hoops.

Concerning the new "California re-issue" black personalized plates, I heard and don't know if this is true, that you can't choose random letters followed by a space and then random numbers as made in the "60"'s. For example: ABC 123. Any other combo is 'OK'. Do you know if this is true. Thought I heard it on the forum here. Just wondering.

Or, if your car has been in service in CA since day one, you do nothing but pay your regular tag fees and continue to run the plates that have been on your car for 50 years. No need to apply for YOM plates if your car already has them, and no $50 fee per year extra, either.

Also, the paint on legacy plates is glass beaded so the colors appear more saturated than the originals.

have a pair of original plates waiting to clear
Not sure about the new black and yellows but the old ones are smaller than the std ca plate. New ones are pretty popular, old cars and many new/late models are putting them on too

I live in CA and this pissed me off. CA proposed in recent history to reproduce the Yellow 56-62 plates, Black 63-69 plates and the Light Blue 70-? (I wanted Yellow plates for my 59). If prepaid orders reached a minimum, my aging memory believes 7500. And I believe the plates were YOM based, especially for all the 63-69 Black vehicles which were not available under the existing YOM program. I do not recall any CA DMV info that these plates would be available for EVERYTHING. The Yellow and Blue plates failed to reach minimum preorders. The Black plates did and they are available on everything which ruins, in my opinion, the "cache" that comes with original looking plates. I feel if the CA DMV had stated that you could put any of the 3 plates on anything, then the Yellow plates would have met the minimum and maybe even the blue plates. Getting off the soapbox.
