Default 113 head valve guide ?

I purchased what was suppose to be a freshly rebuilt set of 113 l98 heads from a member a while back. They were stated to have been shaved .020
New comp 981 springs and new valve guides where installed. The heads were ran briefly before I purchased them. I disassembled one to slightly clean it and had noticed a few valve guide seals were damaged. I noticed with the intake slightly open I have about .005 valve to guide clearance on the exhaust. The intake rocks I'm guessing about .030 . I noticed all the guides have been knurled atleast 1/4 of the guide on the top side only. I have never seen this done on new guides. Do these heads need to go to the machine shot to have new guides installed ? The seller told me he was using a .524 lift cam no issues. I'm planning on using a comp cam xr276hr with 1.52 rr. So the lift will be 502/.510 plus the added lift of the rr. What is the acceptable clearance from the valve retainer to the top of the guide seal ?

.55 retainer to top of seal seems to be the norm.

Sad but the uninformed will put parts in that are hurting themselves and will say "worked fine" and never knew what damage they were really doing.

May as well check for coil bind, seat pressure etc while its apart. Checking the guides a good idea. Some can install liners others put guides in but at that point you have to have a valve job period.

Bummer man. If your going to dump the money tho it's probably better to just buy some fresh aftermarket heads. Even the " cheap chinese" stuff is new designs then the 113.
(i rebuilt mine and wish i would have dumped the extra 300 for some 195's)

I really want afr 195s but money is a issue I'm on disability. I'm thinking if it costs at the most 2-$300 to have them crack checked guides installed and if the valves are ok have a valve job done. This was not what I was expecting but I'm glad I found it now and didnt wonder why the engines burning oil or the valves arnt sealing.

Aluminum doesnt take magnaflux only iron they can tell once they clean if theres a crack which highly unlikely
Typical 3 angle alve job 125-175 avg. No reason to go to a custom valve job without knowing flow#s even at that waste of time really. Guides are cheap
Bet you can get them right for your budget. I hate buying used stuff. Maybe it wasnt intentional on his end he may not have known. Imagine how it would have run for him if things were right. lol

Thanks for the advice , I did get the heads from my buddy friend but he never used them.So I am a third party buyer. he ended up blowing up his engine. With good conscience I can't sell them as is. I posted on his ad on tgo and send the original seller a pm last night but zero reply. I'm thinking I gut stuck with sour lemons.

Actually he means there is that much "wobble" for lack of a better word. The guides have excessive clearance especially at the seat end. He sent me pics of the knurling and it is only at the very top, going down inside maybe a 1/4 inch. I feel this was done so the valve stem would not wear out the seals right away causing the dreaded blue smoke.

I'm not holding my breath that the seller makes it right. I will be more than happy to make a video using a dial indicator to show the side to side movement of the valves.

I had my guides machined and bronze liners installed. It was a very reasonable cost at the time.

1. I didn't sell those heads to you.
2. I sold my heads almost a year ago.
3. I can't guarantee if they're mine, or if they were ever ran.

You are turning this into a giant public pissing match. I'm going to be the bigger one and not entertain this any more.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
