GM Tech Street Races Customer’s C8 Corvette, Hits 148 MPH on Highway

The owner of this C8 Corvette got a bit of an unpleasant surprise after taking his car in for service recently.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen more than one instance of a service technician driving a customer’s C8 Corvette in a questionable manner. In some cases, one could at least make an argument that there is good reason for a tech exceeding the speed limit or accelerating hard after a repair is performed, but it’s hard to excuse what happens in the video below, which was recently posted at Reddit and first discovered by GM Authority.

As has been the case in the past, this incident was caught on film via the car’s Performance Data Recorder. The owner of the C8 Corvette had taken his ride to Fremont Chevrolet in California for an engine problem, which turned out to simply be a loose spark plug. What he didn’t realize, until he got the car back, was that a technician at the dealership took the car on one heck of a test drive after the problem was fixed.

We can only imagine what was going through his head when he viewed the footage on his C8’s PDR and subsequently posted it online. As we can see in the video, which has been trimmed down from what was originally nearly 20 minutes of footage, the Corvette is weaving in and out of heavy traffic at speeds of over 100 mph. Then, a Dodge Charger comes into focus, at which point it becomes obvious exactly what’s going on. The C8 reaches speeds of 148 mph at one point in what is an inexcusably dangerous bit of driving.

The Drive reached out to the owner of the Corvette, who revealed that he was understandably angry when he saw what had transpired. “I had never seen anything like this,” he said. “I was just so shocked, especially because I’d waited 11 months for this car, and it’s so valuable to me. I could’ve lost it, and I could’ve lost it and killed a dude. Killed multiple people. It was insane.”

Thankfully, the dealer appears to be handling the situation well, at least. “The dealership has been really really gracious,” the owner said. “I asked for an extended warranty, and at the same time posted the Reddit thread. And near the end of the day, the dealership was calling me like, ‘That’s a really reasonable offer. Can you please also take down the video? It’s causing us a lot of grief.’ Well, it’s also causing me a lot of grief!”

What’s particularly shocking about these incidents is that these dealer technicians either don’t realize the C8 is capable of recording their nefarious driving or perhaps they just don’t care. Either way, this alarming trend will certainly cause C8 owners to be a bit more hesitant to take their cars in for service.
