[ANSWERED] PDR Video: Why is color balance and contrast so bad?
Original question is here.
ChrisN123 asked:
Why do all the PDR videos published to date have a distinct green cast and overall washed-out look? The camera hardware/firmware must allow for better calibration of color balance and white balance. How about a firmware update to fix the problem?

Tadge answered:
This is a perfect example of continuous improvement and backwards compatibility that I was asked about a couple weeks ago. GM engineering and our partner Cosworth have been working hard to improve the PDR and the user experience. One area of investigation has been the image quality. Coincidentally, a software change was just released for Bowling Green production at the end of March and we will be making it available to customers who already have their cars in the next few weeks. The software includes several changes including improvements in color balance and sharpness of the image on the video.
Here are some actual images comparing the original and new calibration:

That is an excellent improvement. I really wish I had this option available when I bought my car. At the NY Auto show last week I told the model next to the Z06 that she should tell Tadge that he did a great job. She actually knew who he was. I was quite impressed as she seemed to be hired for her superb figure, not her knowledge.

Thank You
My build is scheduled for May 11 and has been a long awaited Cdn order. The one thing that really bothered me about my order was the terrible video quality and the PDR going to waste. Great news Tadge and GM!

I hate to be a negative nancy here, but although the improvement is significant and appreciated, it is nowhere near the quality it should or could be. Looking forward to the update but I hope that they keep working on it and not shelve any further improvements.
Btw that looks like a lovely European village ... any Ring news you wish to break on CF?

Tadge,
Can I redesign the PDR interface, the DIS and the Infotainment system? I'll do it for free to bring it up to the same quality level of the C7. Right now, they feel dated and clunky. Nothing like the interfaces we all use on a daily basis - phones, apps, set top boxes, etc. and nothing like the car they live in. I would just need access to the developers guidelines to get started.
Thanks,
Tom

Before the C7 was released GM invited developers to join their development program for the infotainment system. They want to have an "app store" like Apple. I don't know where that program is but there was all kinds of documentation and development tools available.

"Here are some actual images comparing the original and new calibration"
Looking at the edges of the image where the tree branches, hedges, park bench, vignette, etc are, I would say that is a digitally manipulated version of the original image with corrected color. Perhaps they applied the adjustment values they're calibrating the cameras at to the image?
Unless they performed the upgrade right there in the road without moving the car an inch, that's an approximation of what the adjustment will reflect and not actual before & after photographs.
I'm looking forward to seeing the actual product.
Edit: dutifully retracted after spotting moved shadows, people, car, telemetry, etc. derp.

I think what you see in the images is the actual product. Bear in mind that JPEGs are fairly compressed as it is. If the software update can be done via a USB port or the ODB-2 port, there's no reason Cosworth couldn't have done it right there on the road without moving the car.
