Whats the best looking/designed kit? Pictures would be great!

I couldn't find one I liked, so I made my own.

I inset the mounting panel to keep it flush, and I covered with with black vinyl, it looks fantastic I think, should look great in the car.

What did you make it out of?

 

VrumVrum makes a couple of different lettering styles so there are some choices. They are really nice CNC aluminum.

 

who is VrumVrum and how do I get ahold of them to get some of those sweet face plates???

Here's one of his plates installed... photo was taken at night to show the blue LED's in the HVAC, so it is a little fuzzy but still gives you an idea of how it looks installed.

Wow I never knew Mcintosh made head units, thats awesome, how does it sound?

 

McIntosh has been making automotive HU's, CDC's, amps, speakers, etc. for the last 10 years or so. Several years after that, Clarion bought out McIntosh Labs (I don't know if that includes their home audio stuff?). But from what I've heard, Clarion let McIntosh Labs run as it's own entity and hasn't done anything to degrade their product line. McIntosh Labs website

Anyway, I bought this HU, it's companion CD changer MCD4000, and MC4000M & MC440M amplifiers, when they first came out and put them all in a Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee (and MC440M amplifier) is gone. But the HU, CDC and big amp are now in the 98 Roadster.

I am running the Mac HU and Amplifier with: Dynaudio tweeters (home audio), Dynaudio mid-ranges (automotive) and ScanSpeak mid-bass drivers all in the doors; and two JL Audio 8W7 subs; no rear fill. As far as the sound, my biased opinion thinks the sound is nothing short of amazing given the listening environment. I do have some tweaking to do with the crossover points and gain to bring up the middle frequencies; though that task is at least 14 months past due.

I am currently repackaging my sub-woofers and hope to be completed by the end of March, at which time I'll post new pics of my latest install, hopefully to including a new PEQ and mounting for the HU/PEQ/AC controls. (I used to have more photos of my install on the interweb until photohost.org went kaputz a few months ago. Fortunately I still have the photos locally).

Anyhoo, that's my spiel, sorry so long and somewhat off topic. I think I answered your question....

I will attest to the SQ of Nelson's system. It is very nice. But he does have a problem with the mids... the forward bass is a bit off, leaving the subs feeling rearward. But its all minor stuff.

The install plate looks great in his dash!

 

Damn, I have to work on those mids! Now, everybody knows. And my mid-bass, too!
