Hey forum members i just bought a escort 8500 x50. I have a few questions. First off this is my first ever radar detector so bare with me. Should i get a signel if theres a cop nearby ? I was on the garden state parkway and a state came up and went right on by me. My point is im guessing he didnt have any radar on huh??? I didnt like that feeling. I always throught that they ALWAYS have it on. Another thing is the sensitivity control it says that for the most part you should leave it on auto, not highway. Is that what most of you guys do?? and last of all, can someone tell me the diff bands x-band, k-band, ka band, when i see these what is it telling me beshides slow down!!!!!!!!! thanks

I have the same unit- not all Police cars drive with the radar turned on...sometimes they Pace you (meaning drive up behind you and see how fast you are going) if it does not sound when they are next to you- they don't have it on...I leave mine on auto- but it can get annoying around town or in a city as just about everything sets it off...so basically I use it on the highway or if I am a little above the limit on an open road. the different bands you mention are the different flavors (if you will) of radar- each have a different characteristic I.E. Distance away the shoot etc...but what I do if I hear it scream...SLOW DOWN! :-) I can tell you, the day after I bought it, it saved my behind! I slowed down to the limit and drove right past a hidden trooper...he looked at me go by as I looked at him...it was like the cat and the mouse... good luck with it- and enjoy...you bought a great unit my friend!
Leave it in "auto".
you will also notice that when you have multiple radar "targets" in the display, next to each type of radar that is being displayed you will see a line, that is the signal level of the radar that you are receiving. it's also called a "bogey counter".
