I went to install my new Infinity 6 1/2 inch speakers behind the seats when I realized that they are actually 6 1/4 inch. The stock bose speakers are 6 1/2 inches screw hole to screw hole. What have you guys used for rear speakers? I am going to return these to Circuit City tonight.
I see alot of guys don't use the rear speakers if they upgrade the door speakers and add a sub. I was wanting to put in some Alpine component speakers in the doors, something for the rear speakers, and a 12 inch sub in the rear compartment. Is this not a good idea?
the reason why we dont use rear speakers is due to the effects it has on the soundstage. When you add rear speakers it tends to draw your attention behind you insted of in front of you. Adding a sub only makes this effect more noticable.
I have cdt's up front and an image dynamics sub in the back and i think it sound amazing. the sound surrounds you in the small cabin of the vette.
Thanks for the tip, but can't you reduce that effect by adjusting the front to back speaker ballance? The head unit that I have has a separate subwooder channel that I can adjust, so I can still get a 4 channel effect if I use all four speakers plus the sub. I don't know, I may not like it and can always take them out. But it also just dawned on me that I could put large washers under the screws that would hold down the speakers. I was really tired after working all day on the insulation installation and didn't think about using washers until I stopped to have dinner. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.
with scottfx (I almost always do)
I do not run rear speakers either. I've yet to see a live performance that had speakers in the rear. The sound comes from the front and I believe that is the way it should be reproduced. Of course, you know what you like, I'm just putting in my $.02.
In large SUVs, etc. , I can possibly see having rear speakers so the rear passengers can hear better. Also, in a 5.1 set-up, you need rear speakers. The Vette is neither
Just FYI, 99% of all nationally recognized cars in sound quality competions do NOT use rear speakers.

i didn't know that, that's pretty cool.
how about you try this... dont install them and see if you like the sound without the rears. if you like it, then you saved yourself some work and some money. If you think it's not loud enough because you dont have rear speakers, then you need an amp and not more speakers. Keep in mind that you should play with the eq on your h/u or amp to make sure that the sub doesn't sound like it's coming from the back, make sure it is well blended and you will be sold.
But...if you really like hearing the rear speakers then go for it, after all it's what sounds good to you.
yep, ask Randy (EatRice) about it. All the heavy hitters like Richard Clark, Gary Biggs, and Mark Eldrich (SP?) Allot of the cars you see in magazines with all the speakers and TVs, etc. would most likely do terrible in sound quality judging.
I hate to brag but my white Eagle Talon TsiAWD won the World Points Championship in USAC in the 0-150 watt class. In the judging lanes for sound quality, only the front Focals and ID 8" woofers (in the floorboards under the dash) were used. In SPL, the four 10" ID subs in back were used. Again, no rear speakers and that car was tops that year, period

this is funny, i've never cared about sound competitions or know anything about them but that was interesting to know...however, as with anything, everyone has their own preferences...my own preference is i CAN'T STAND having the soundstage in front of me in a car. to me it sounds horrible, like it's lacking something. i prefer to have it surrounding me and set everything (front/back, side/side) so that it feels like the "sweet spot" is right at my head. can't do that with fronts only, can get close but not quite (at least in cars i've owned)...too each his own
Ive competed as well, not in USACi, but in IASCA and only in SPL, never in SQ, although I suspect I would have done well, MMATS equipment is VERY clean. Never won anything as prestigious as Knew Dawg, but I definitely held my own in Advanced NW1.
In my toyota I ran tweets and 2 6.5" midbass drivers along with 3 12s plus 4 1/4s and 6.5s up front, and I quite liked having the sound stage around me a opposed to all up front. I CAN see why SQ guys dont do it though, its easy to muddle frequencies together, get cancelation or just an awkward stage, but I think if you get your crossovers, fading and EQ set properly, you can make rear speakers work quite well for you even with high volume high bass setups.

Heh, sounds like you havent sat in my car
just kiddin, but serioiusly, have you sat in many competition level audio systems? If you were listening to Ozzy Osbourne, the ozzman should sound like he is peeing on you leg while Randy Rhodes whales out some notes. (closest analogy I could think of ) But some of the systems that are flat lined for RTA measurment sound kind of goofy sounding...to me at least, I like my peaky fequency spectrum!

hey snoop, i'm sure your car sounds awesome . but that's not really what i'm talking about. i don't mean that the sound quality is horrible, i just don't like the soundstage being in front of me. SQ being equal, i would choose soundstage even with my head or even a tiny bit behind me any day. the best setup i've heard in a car was at a show where they had set up a true 5.1. the music really was surrounding, you couldn't tell where the speakers were. only the vocals were coming from some hidden center channel. that was awesome to me i don't want to know where randy's guitar is coming from, i want to be immersed in it! :lol same with classical music, i want to hear all the tiny details surrounding me...
maybe i'm crazy
I'm running Focal polyglass components in the front and left the rear alone. Had a custom box built in the back to house my 12". The rears just get drowned out anyway (I have a vert too).
The sound is awesome and it just seemed to be a waste of $$$ to replace the rears.
