[C5] replaced HU, some questions
i replaced my HU with pioneer's avic-n1. i used the Metra adapter (which sux) but am about to replace that with the soundgate unit. my questions are regarding the retained accessory power and the automatic volume level control. first, the retained accessory power for the radio is gone. as soon as i turn off the key, the stereo turns off. is there a way around this? second, i like the auto volume control feature and that has also gone away. is there a way to keep this? i figure the answer to #1 should be yes but i don't know what i would need to do. i'm more skeptical about #2 cause i would guess that has something to do with the stock HU communicating with the BCM...anyone??
#1 should happen. That timing is based on data from the CCM. At least it is on every other car I have installed on that has a delay circuit.
As for #2, that's based on the head. If your head has it, fine, if not, no way.
The GM system, if automated, was dependant on the CCM, however, most aftermarket heads that have it use a small microphone to pick up noise and adjust accordingly.
For #1, the car's RAP also controls the windows. You should be able to tap into the window power wire and run it through a relay that controls power to your new HU to maintain the radio with RAP. If you can't find the right wire send me a PM and I'll look it up in my manual.
You could use the window wire to power everything if you want to, but then your radio would always be running off of the window fuse. If you put in a standard automotive relay to separate the circuits then you will only have a minimal additional current on the window fuse, and you can power the radio from wherever you want with another fuse dedicated solely to the radio.
In my younger days I would tap in wherever I could to power whatever I wanted. I often found myself going because of problems that came up later due to an ill-advised connection that eventually overloaded something that didn't have anything to do with my original project
