Stereo Experts Inside Please
If I do not care about the Onstar, do I still need these other components inorder to run an aftermarket HU?
Thanks,
James
I didn't know the onstar was integrated with the audio... do you have nav? That could be why... oh, wait, of course, it more then likely talks to you through the audio. I would get the necessary parts...
Situations like this are becoming very common in many cars. Honda started years ago intergrating the dome light into the radio. Then the keyless entry also. GM with the Onstar.
I am curious...has he told you what parts he needs and who makes them? I deal directly with Perphieral Electronics and last I checked they do not have anything verified.
OEM are sneaky bastards. You also have to deal with the manufactures making the stereos odd shapes, etc. to make aftermarket radios that much harder to intergrate. Examples are the GM full size trucks with the radio in two places in the dash and the Ford Tarus oval crap.
I was told the part (board) costs about $150.00 in order to keep Onstar and maybe things like having the radio stay on after you turn off the car but before you exit.
I hate it. With a passion.
Get the board. You need to onstar to work. If nothing else, cancel the subscription to it... then it won't matter. But if it's on and working? Get the board.
Here is why: Onstar is a 2 way system. If the airbags burst, it calls you and the local authorities based on GPS data (if I remember rightly).
It can also be used as a theft recovery tool.
The problem? if they try to reach you, or your in a wreck... I hazard to guess what would happen... I don't even know if it would throw a warning to Onstar that something was off line.
strikes me as a cheap price to pay to get functionality.
Besides, you have 1 year paid, after that, it's monthly. Cancel it... then you can remove whatever.
That is a class 2 databus system. YOu need a gmah24b. It is plug and play and will retain the entire onstar and bose system.............
