Default Want XM - Need advice

Hi, I'm looking to add XM to my 98 C5 with a stock Bose system.

Am considering two options, hooking a Terk XM Commander to the stock system or buying a new head unit that is XM compatible. From what I've seen on the boards there are positives and negatives to each approach.

The stock radio sounds fine to me so my first thought was to go with the Commander but after adding PIE adapters the total cost approaches $250. I can get a decent head unit for that price but am concerned about compatibility with the existing speaker system and electronics.

I've seen some good information on this board but would like to learn more about other's experiences with this and would appreciate feedback on either approach.

I added a Sirius radio to my '98, it an Audiovox SISR001- FM, it's like an XM commander.
I removed my 12 disk changer and used a GM10-AUX interface to run the audio into my factory bose system.

I have no complaints about the sound, and the GM10-AUX only cost about $70.00

Thanks for the info but I don't currently have a changer so I'll probably need the PIE Cor-Har as well unless my car is pre-wired - that harness costs at least another $70. Some cars are pre-wired but I haven't been able to locate the interface on mine. Where was the changer originally installed in your '98?

they are all "pre wired", the connectors are in the passenger side foorwell, the only way you will have the harness in the back of the car is if the car came with the CD changer installed from the factory.

My '98 never had a changer installed so am I right in assuming that I'll need the PIE Cor-Har and GM10 adapters, or will the GM10 interface directly with the connectors in the passenger footwell?

if you are installang a satellite reciever in the trunk area then you will need the cor-har harness also.
you could wire the GM10-aux into the connectors in the passenger side footwell if you want, but it will require cutting the connectors off and soldering or crimping the GM10-aux and the changer wires together.

the other issue you will have with using the cor-har is the fact that your '98 only has one of the connectors for the CD changer in the passenger side footwell, '98's that did not come from the factory with a cd changer did not have the second "three wire" connector in the footwell area. you will need to hardwire the "three wire" connector into the cor-har harness.

it's not as hard as it sounds, the three wire connector has the power connections and data connections for the cd changer. the GM10-aux will need both of these, the other connector (four wire) has the audio connections.

Because of the space issues it seems like the trunk is the only area to install a remote receiver like the XM Commander, so the cor-har harness is probably a must. I hadn't heard about the three wire issue but it shouldn't be a problem so long as those wires can be found in the same area of the passenger footwell as the audio connections.

Have you seen a schematic anywhere online that shows the specific connections required to get this running? That would be really helpful but I haven't been able to locate anything like it online.

Thanks

there is a write up in the tech tips section on installing a cd changer when the three wire plug is missing.

there are no wires there to connect to, you will have to tap into them behind the fuse panel.

I installed my XM Commander with the control box beneath the passenger seat. I still needed the Cor-Harness to connect to the GM10-Aux from the two connectors in the passenger side footwell.

Nice install! Where did you place the controller for the Commander, in the ashtray?

I read on another thread about some folks experiencing a problem with low audio line level and a faint beeping sound using this setup. Have you had this problem?

I did place the XM control unit in the ashtray area...completely hidden with the door closed.

I have not had any beeping sounds or low audio level problems.

I just noticed that indentation in the XM control box under the seat...must have a bolt or something that put pressure on it...but it seems to have tolerated it with no problem.

Finally picked up the XM Commander and installed it today in the C5. She doesn't have the CD changer so I've decided to use the FM modulator for the time being until a reasonably priced cor-har and GM10-Aux show up on eBay. Just can't see paying $150 for wires

I also picked up an Audiolink PowerDriver PD2 on eBay and plan to add a powered sub to the system at some point soon. That ought to kick it up a notch while keeping that stock look.

Everyone's been very helpful - thanks for the feedback on this thread.

I've picked up a GM10-AUX but haven't gotten a Cor-Har and am considering not using it. If I've got to tap three wires why not tap the other four in the passenger footwell and skip the $70 harness?

Does anyone know which wires in the four wire connector located in the footwell correspond to the wires on the GM10?

someone on the forum with a wiring diagram may be able to help you with finding the correct wires, the only other thing you may need is the connector to plug into the GM10-aux.

Actually the GM10-Aux comes with a short harness. One end plugs into the unit and the other into the CD changer harness (or PIE cor-har).

With the proper diagram it shouldn't be necessary to use the cor-har - just tap the lines in the passenger footwell.
