Amp in protect mode

Amp in protect mode
Today while driving along my amp went into protect mode. No sound- no nothing. Its a hifonics zues 5 channel. Any ideas??

1) overheat
2) speaker wires came loose and are touching each other or ground
3) speaker voice coil shorted out

The amp did feel hot, would it return to normal after cooling off?
Its not the speaker wires.

it would still be hot right after it went into protect mode. is this a new install? What impedance is the sub wired to?

It owers a JL stealth box, so I dont really know what impedance it is.
