Hey guys... Do you have time to answer a quick question? If so here goes.... I installed a pair of MTX amps (MTX 801D for the sub and MTX 4244 for highs and mids). I used 4 Ga wire for the 801 and 8 Ga for the 4244, both are grounded under the pass seat. The problem is once i turn it up to a certain volume the highs (blau components) in the doors cut out and all lights in the car dim? Any ideas of how to fix it?
All the lights in the car dim?? That is not good.
It sounds like your MTX amp powering the componets is going into protection mode, but why?? One set of speakers should not do that to that amp. The amp going into protection mode should definitely not dim all the car lights. I'm stumped, maybe the ground?
Maurice...sorry I missed you online last night. When you say cut out, do they shut off and not come back on or go on and off? Have you upgraded any of your factory lines under the hood? How hold is your battery and is it in good condition? Do you happen to notice what the voltage gauge reads when this happens...the cutting out that is? How long are you playing the stereo till this happens, at what volume level, and is the car running when you are?
I agree with Jay that one set of speakers should not cause shut down. It is most likely a voltage problem.
Ground, Ground, Ground. Check all you speakers for proper wire connections. If you still get this "cut out" I would add a cap to allow your amps to be at optimal operating voltage....
A capacitor provides current not voltage and in his case would be a band aid to a problem not a solution. Very possible it is a ground but not enough information has been provided to know yet.
Sorry if i was too vauge.. when i turn up the volume to about 17 - 20 (max is 50, but i cant handle more than 25) just the tweets die out. The MTX 4244 powers the 2 way components in the doors, and the factory rears. The voltage meter drops to about 12.2 - 12.9 when the bass hits, and now that i think about it, the highs die out after the bass comes in really hard. it is not a complete loss of highs,as the rears and 6 1/2" door speakers still play, but it sounds muffled. When i turn it back down the highs cime back just as bright as they were before they left.
Also, the battey is the factory I think, It seens to be in good shape (reads 14.2 -14.4 on the display when i'm not pumping the stereo). No upgrade to the factory lines under the hood. and yes the car is allways running when I play the stereo.
If just your tweeters stop playing, my guess you have a tweeter protection circuit on the crossover of the componet set and you are overloading it. Some crossovers protect the tweeters with fuses, light bulbs (don't laugh, they are my favorite choice), or some type of resetable circuit breaker. My guess is you have the latter.`
It is also time to do the "big 3". Plus, get an Optima, the Delco battery is known to leak and that will cost you big time
