Default Is it possible to hack Alpine head units?

I just swapped out my old CDA-7832 for a newer model(CDA-9847), and the newer unit doesn't hold a candle to the sound quality of the older one. I do prefer the appearance and ergonomics of the newer unit and the fact that it plays CD-R's whereas the older one didn't. Anyone know if it's possible to swap some of the internals from one unit to the other, or of some esoteric shop that might specialize in that sort of thing?

I'm sure it can be done but IMO it will cost you more than the list price of both head-units. I wonder why the newer head-unit doesn't sound as good

It doesn't have the same clarity in the upper mid range, the bass doesn't sound as deep or rich, and there is an annoying bias in the upper mid bass region. They do give you some fancy band-adjustable tone controls, but no amount of tweaking seems to make it right. I'll probably just switch back to the 7832 and forget about playing CD-Rs. Bummer.

I have the alpine ai-net 6 disc changer with the supposedly superior MDAC converter, but I stopped using it because it too could not match the 7832 for sound quality. Maybe my deck is just a freak.

NO, for the most part the 78XX line was better made than the 98XX series. I've noticed Alpine is starting to head in the same direction as Rockford Fosgate in the last few years .

Selling products to Best Buy has hurt both brands IMO. Now don't get me wrong, Alpine still makes some of the best headunits out there ((F1 series) I just read about in an car audio magazine, that system was about $10,000 for the HU, processor, and one amp ).
Just don't expect anything you can get at Best Buy to be hi-end equipment

I love the SQ of the 7998. So very clean and crisp. I would get another one for bastet44s car.

I do want to add an Alpine ERA-G320 (EQ) to the head... but that's a future enhancement.
