I have a '92 vert, and the amps are blown in the rear right and front left speakers. I have disconnected both broken speakers. Eventually I am going to either install something different (e.g. an Alpine system) or buy new amps.
In the meantime, I am thinking of temporarily switching the working left rear amp into the left front speaker (so at least I get some form of stereo again), but I heard there are equalization differences in the amps.
Anyone have an opinion on switching the amps temporarily?
The Bose amps are trash, at least thats my experience, the last rebuilt one started smoking right after I put it in, I finally broke down and bought two new front speaker assemblies from GM, they were big bucks.
Right now I have been doing a lot of research by using my factory bose head unit and installing aftermarket amps/ speakers and a sub using the PAC AOEM GM21 interface which will let me bypass the Bose amps and speakers.
The word is still out, I can't find anyone who has done this yet, other than to use the PAC interface to add a sub.
My understanding is that the only speakers to have external amps are the door subwoofers. The twiddlers and the rear speakers are powered by the deck. Sounds like you could possibly just have some bad speakers. I just did the Pac OEM-1 interface last week and added a sub which improved the sound greatly but still not what I am use to. I am getting component JL's for the front doors to go along with the sub that I installed. Also I am putting in an Alpine deck. This will be the same set up I have in my SuperCrew and I love the sound in it. I am selling the JL 250/1 if anyone is interested to make way for the JL 500/5. The JL 250/1 is only one week old.
Try contacting http://www.corvetteradios.com I found them by accident when the amp went in my '92 Nissan Maxima with Bose. I just Googled the stock number on the Amp and they came up.
But, it is a temp fix for the entire system. Eventually, I'll get around to replacing the entire system. But right before the holidays, I'll spend the $90 to get another amp.

I originally thought that too. However I disassembled the rear right speaker that was whistling and squeaking - sure enough there is a separate amp in there. The burning smell I got from the left front when it blew smelt just like amp-electronics-gone-bang too. I just disconnected that one.
I'm going to go ahead and switch the amps as a temporary fix for my listening pleasure. I will post here with the results.
I appreciate all your advice about replacing the Bose with a new system - I will probably do that eventually. Right now my head office approval limit (i.e. the missus) allows me to get new gages, boost and fuel pressure. I will need to build some more brownie points before the new stereo goes in.
