Radar Detector

I installed it myself, wasn't really hard to do. I used the switched accessory wire in the passenger footwell to power it so it comes on and goes off by itself when I start the car. The plastic around the ash tray had to be slightly modified, but I could put the tray back in if I ever had a reason to (if anyone trys to smoke in my C5 they get pushed out at full speed).
Cops can detect your detector with "VG2", but most every quality detector on the market today has "anti-VG2", so that isn't really a problem any more.
If the cop has "instant on" radar, then your detector pretty much just tells you that you were just hit (assuming that you're the one the cop was aiming for). It doesn't make the detector useless, there's still a good chance that you can pick up the radar when he's shooting at someone else and be warned before you get to the trap.
FWIW, I drive through VA several times a year, and it seems to me that most of the troopers on the interstates there just leave their radar on constantly a lot more than troopers in other states. That's probably due to detectors being illegal, so they don't have to be as sneaky as cops in other states.
