I need help from audio folks here.I want to get rid of the bose system and go with something better. Not knowing much about this kind of stuff,i need help.I would like to go with a new head unit, amp, speakers, and subwoofer. What can you guys suggest.I just want something that sounds decent and since im old i need something that i can hear.Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks guys
I guess there are a couple questions you have to answer first:
what is your budget? and are you going to be doing the install yourself (it's pretty easy in this car)?
you'll love this upgrade regardless!
i suggest going the car pc route if you are up to it

As far as the budget goes, would 1000.00 do a decent system?I ahve no idea what a decent system would cost, one of the reasons i need help. What does a car pc do?Im going to try and do the install myself.

For a thousand dollars I would look at replacing the speakers and maybe adding an amp and sub-woofer. I like Alpine products but there is a lot of good stuff out there.
here is close to what i have (i dont have a headunit and have since switch out the amp to a different one) and i'm/was really happy with it:
door speakers: $150 (cdt 2 way components)
sub: $150 (image dynamics 12")
sub box $150 (subthump)
Amp: $350 (phoenix gold ti500.4)
wires:$50 (www.knukoncepts.com)
head unit: $300
everything :-), check out my sig up above if you want to see what they are capable. if you go that route you should probably double your budget though.

not sure about the head units but try to find something with 4volt rca preouts. this will get you cleaner sound. I have always been a huge fan of eclipse. they focus more on sq then bells and whistles. Check out there website. also look at the c5 audio faq and you can check out vrum vrum's install plates. its a nice touch to the single din install.
also, if you have the budget and time I'd fatmatt the doors at least if not the whole car. I havent done this yet and consiquently i have the x-overs set a bit high for the doors becuase the new drivers will rattle the door more then the bose set up.

I'm putting together a system now and have everything but the headunit. I'm going to wait a few weeks to pick one as the Consumer Electronics Show is this week in Las Vegas. Lots of new products will debut there. Car stereo stuff, particularly head units, have become just as much about fashion as technology, so most manufacturers come out with new product lines every year.
Of the current models I like the Pioneer Premier DEH-P860MP and DEH-P960MP, Alpine CDA-9855, and Blaupunkt MP74. Those can all be had for $300-$400. But the main reason I'm looking at those is they do 3-way crossovers, which you probably won't need. But those are some good brands to check out as well. I've heard lots of people say eclipse makes good headunits, but I've had some of their other products (speakers and an amp) and was not impressed. Never tried their headunits though, so maybe that's what they are good at.
As for the rest of the system, I agree with what Scott_FX said. That totalled to $1150 I think and will be a great system. Probably another $80 or so for some speaker mounts and a HU mount from corvette forum member vrumvrum.
I have always been an Alpine or Pioneer head unit guy ... but from what I know from my friends (and 2 dealers) stay away from the "glide touch" alpine head units (9855,54,53 I think) and wait for their new units to come out in the next month or so. Have been told there were a lot of problems with the Glide touch models from both dealer friends.
I am still making some final decisions on stereo components myself and hope to be getting my install started in about a month when the new head units will be out. Ideally you want at least a 4v preout from the headunit IMO and even if you don't use it the 3 way crossover option is always nice.
I have all the interior out now putting in Dans insulation kit.Thats what got me thinking about upgrading the system. Seems like the more i read, the more confused i get.
