Default Which radar detector?

Heres the problem, my state has put a new law on the books that sez if they catch you at or over 100mph, they will take your license, thus making you uninsurable ( at a rate you could afford ) Now i don't zip around at 100+ any more than the next person, however there are times here that the freeway is empty and you have about 5 miles of almost strait away. Of course the troopers sit on the on ramp and you have a earth and concrete barrier between you and them until it's too late. And to add to it i haven't had a ticket in over twenty five years, but even i can see the writing on the wall.
So is there a unit that will give me a little warning in advance or do i just have to grow up as well as old?.....( the toys are us jingle keeps running through my mind at this point! )....... ...joe

Try a search or post in Off Topic.

There is everything and more that you could want to know about
detectors there. LEOs contribute, so you get a view from the
other side of the ticket pad, too.

What state are you from? I was watching the news last night and they metioned something like this in Oregon. But they had a airplane helping the ground units out. I have a V1 and I tell you right now nothing is 100%.

Nothing is 100% with ANY Radar Dectector. They are just a tool to help and used properly they will most of the time. Going 80 and up you are just asking for a Ticket, I should know...lol.

When I travel in Washington State those wide open empty highways are always too tempting. Also the stretch from Hoover Dam to Vegas is hard to just go 80. My Bel has paid for itself many times over, but I have gotten 1 Ticket in the past 10 years. They are not fool proof by any means, and if the Police want to catch you, they will. Some watch and wait for the obvious Speeders then gun them. Buy the best Detector you can and learn about it and the arsenal used against you. Valentine and Bel are usually the TOP dogs. I've been using Bel for the last 18 years, Passport and Escort before that.

I would like to try a Valentine but haven't yet, I like the arrows that tell you where the signal came from.

Some new units can also be upgraded in the future which is another feature to look for.

Go to speedzones.com and policeoneproducts.com for more info online. Road & Track and Car & Driver mags usually do reviews on Radar and Laser detectors once a year, I think in Spring not to sure.

All the posts on detectors not being a failsafe or cure all for getting a ticket are correct. Remember this: even if you have racecar driver reaction times, if you're going say, 120, and your detector goes off, your chances of slowing to below 100 are slim. Not to say it can't be done, but you will get nailed for 90 mph or more, and that's got to be at least 20 over the limit.

Long before Valentine acknowledged it on his website, I told him of radar that would cause my "highly upgraded" V1 to never go to full on. Yet, I got caught even tho it "seemed" as if there was radar far, far away and out of range. In fact, the police cars were right in front of me, driving toward me, and within visual range (but either cloaked or camoflauged like very low light bars). And then, too, there's always the old "bumper check" which is riding along behind you, pacing your mph. I had it done at nite north of Los Angeles. No radar allowed but I was way over the limit.

Just as the radar detectors have tried to get better, radar guns have gotten MUCH better. Stress: they have gotten much better. Any relative who is a law enforcement, traffic cop will tell you this in confidence.

Also, it doesn't help much when insurance companies like GEICO buy, and give away to local and state agencies radar, lidar, etc., for free. They've been doing that for well over ten years. You can thank Warren Buffett who owns GEICO.

Jammers seem like an option, but I've never seen reliable, indedpendent studies (somehow, I doubt Consumer Reports will do a study on them , nor will Road&Track or Car&Drivel), and some states/localities ban them. And it isn't a cheap experiment, esp. if it doesn't work!!!

That said, Escort, Valentine, Bel, Passport are still some of the big names in radar detectors.

Just went through the same thing recently myself. I wanted the best. It came down to the Valentine, Passport 8500, Belronics 995, Beltronics RX65. Although the Valentine is very good and I liked the directional aspect, I passed on it because of the relatively high level of reported false alarms. The rest appeared fairly even give or take an issue. I ended up with the Beltronics 995 because I found a good deal on it. I'm extremely pleased with it. The false alarms are amazingly small and it picks up active radar or lazer from a very long distance. In three months it's already saved my a$$ 5 times. So I'd say it's paid for itself. Good luck

Those detector companies that pay him to consult mysteriously get top ratings on speedzones site. Fors has offered his services to Valentine and has been declined and to get back, the Valentine V1 has never been the top rated detector on speedzones while it has never lost a detector comparison from Car and Driver!

I've got a valentine 1, which I've noticed somewhere between 1 to 2 Miles of alert before I see them. The arrows help to show where they're coming from so you know where to look. Little pricey, but you get what you pay for is true here. It's paid for itself many times over, just ask the people that pass me and then a mile or so later they're on the side getting they're ticket. I go to Las Vegas often and wouldn't leave home without it.

Nothing by RMR or Rocky Mountin Radar will jam laser or radar and their radar detection sucks.

For sure there is no device 100% secure but Ive seen the jammer called the PhaserII, It keeps the radar gun from displaying a speed for a certain amount of time or distance. I heard it really works but it is illegal in certain states. To me a fuzzbuster is only good if there is traffic in the area then your detector will go off early as they are clocking other people. If that doesent work for u then keep it at 99!!!
