I want to replace my factory speakers with after market speakers. According to Circuit $hitty the 79 Vette will take 6x9 in the back and 4x6 in the front. So I race on down to get the speakers, run on home to install them and sure enough, even if I stood on my head the aftermarket speakers do NOT fit in the original 6x9 holes. The magnet is too big. Not even close. With that said, does anyone know what, if any, aftermarket speakers will fit without having to modify the car? I don't want to keep buying and trying. I suppose I could install a box back there but that defeats the whole purpose of "orginal" car.
Thoughts anyone? I did not even try the 4x6 in the front because I am sure the aftermarket speaker would not fit there either. help!?!?! My new head unit sounds like crap with these cheesy paper factory speakers. Thanks in advance!
If i knew off hand I would tell you and I am sorry about your bad circuit city experience idk what store you went to but that car isn't even listed in the book as I look at it everyday so whoever told u that was talkin out of there rear. Someone should chime in with answere soon
What about the rear though? It seems that the magnets are all too big to fit in the factory speaker holes. Am I just stuck with the factory speakers unless I am willing to modify the car??
I put a set of Kicker 4x6's in the dash of my '80 and they fit wtihout any trouble. However the 6x9's in the rear... oy, magnet depth is definitely a problem. I wasn't worried about keeping it original the way you are and the interior of my 80 needs a re-do anyway. For now my buddy slapped together a box that we mounted them in and have it sitting in the back - we'll do something prettier later.
I wish I knew a speaker that fit off the top of my head. I guess the only thing I can suggest is to try to get an idea of the interference depth - do the speakers stick out 1" from where the frames go or 1/2" etc. Look up the "top mount" depth of the speakers you bought, subtract that interference and then try to find a set where the top mount depth is less than that.
