Default need some design help from you guys

I purchased a hpx-700 dsp processor, looks like this:

i remolded my original modified dash and put this right below the screen and above the ac controls (cramping up the screen a bit)

This is just a little too cramped for my tastes, though it doesn't look horrible, i'm not sure i'm 100% digging it. (i'll have to texture it before i make up my mind) compared to my orig modified dash:

So i'm exlporing other options on how to get all this gear into the dash. I'm thinking about hacking up the stock a/c controls, putting the vfd display, the temp *****, the auto button, the mode button, and the fan speed buttons in the opening below the screen and then putting the rest of the buttons horizontally molded into the area right in front of the shifter.

Now i'm asking for your crazy/clever ideas to help me brainstorm. I'd like to make it remain as oem looking as possible and that dsp processor is just killing me! i dont want to get rid of it though and I'm not up to hacking that thing apart (the a/c controls would be easier to hack up, so that is an option)

thanks,

scott

Ok crazy idea I saw done in a mustang years back how about putting the processor in the sunvisor, just solder onto the back of the removable faceplate and run the 10-12 20gauge wires to under the dash somewhere and wire into the processor

the faceplate isn't detachable...it already is corded :-). the dsp processor is in the trunk, so that is also an option (and easy to do). i wonder if it'd be a pain in the butt to have it there though? if the dispaly would bother my eyes being that close. maybe i'll drive around a while with it mounted there with a few rubber bands. great suggestion though!

dont worry about getting too crazy with suggestioins either.

I am not sure of the depth and what exactly is contained in this particular area but how about mounted vertically (facing up) between the bottom edge of the shifter and just in front of the traction control button?

I am pretty sure you want to have access to that if for nothing else but it is cool to play with.

I am doing my best to be without processor in this new system as I can't handle giving up any more room in my ride.

actually, the processor has to be readily accessible since it is the master volume control. i wish i could just hide it away, all my problems would be solved :-)
That is another good idea though...both of them are giving me some ideas... keep em coming!

Hey Scott, How've you been brutha?!
Unless you want to keep that piece in view, and the volume is your only reason for keeping the unit in cabin..
How about trunk mounted with a remote for the volume?
Just a thought unless you're going to need more access to it for other settings on the fly.

how about putting it below the indoor temp sensor. in the knee part, right of the steering column. You will have to mod the knee board, or whatever its called. but i dont see it being that much different than modding the center dash.

didn't really even think of moving anything down there, that was a good idea too.

however... I am testing out my original idea. just pulled a mold of the ac control cover and will be cleaning it up this weekend and laying in the abs. I will use that piece to hack up and mold into my radio surround. The secondary buttons (off, a/c, defroster, circulation) will reside to the left of the shifter on the vertical part of the piece (near where your leg would be) Now i gotta go refine my soldering skills to remove that vfd display from the pcboard GULP.

or maybe the a/c controls can go to the knee board. Since you would set that and forget it.

Keep the processor below the radio and relocate the A/C controls. Remember....stereo ranks above comfort

about time you chime in!

oh... and my radio is in my room...darn car pc's don't have radios yet!

I'll give the ac control relocation some serious thought. I still think i want the a/c display under the screen though.

sorry, when I first glanced at your post I figured it was computer related which I know little about :o Your the expert there.
In fact, my home computer crashed and I had to get my neighbor to fix it. He replaced my toasted hard drive and he still managed to save the info off the bad hard drive That way I didn't lose any of my web addresses

PS If you do take the A/C controls out of the dash, you might be the first to do it

So you're gonna try and separate the AC controls and display?

Need more info before I chime in . . .

1 What is the unit located below the screen in your picture above?

2 Is it going away?

3. You'll probably have to rework the radio surround again . . .

-yes

1 What is the unit located below the screen in your picture above?
-It was an HID (human interface device) but it's no longer needed
2 Is it going away?
-yup
3. You'll probably have to rework the radio surround again.
-sure thing, i'm going to have to lower the bar that is right above the old ashtray area (the lowest one) just a bit to fit the vfd screen in there nicely. I dont want to touch the area immediately around the lcd screen because that is what i like so much about that install. and i want to try to integrate the ashtray door (or simialr) to hide the dsp processor.

so the project is underway *gulp* i made a mold of the a/c control face plate so i can duplicate it, mold it, hack it up and not touch the original.

I cast my first mold last night and it came out ok, the abs sludge i used was way too thick and introduce a lot of bubble so the piece wasn't that stong. I recycled the plastic and am casting another one with a lot thinner medium this time.
I found someone that will extend the vfd display off the board (not feeling ambitious enough to desolder on that board)

I have not decided on an ultimate design, i have a few ambitious ideas and a couple fail safes. i'll document this process and post pics when i'm done. :-)
