I love Pioneer decks, they sound great. Unfortunately I cant get mine working in Vette even though they are compatible. They make a Pioneer CD player that will fit directly in the space of the original radio. Its like $500 though.

A couple of resources for you:

CF Audio/Electronics Forum

C4 Audio FAQ

Also, you are not limited to 1.5 DIN heads. 1.0 DIN heads will fit fine with an install kit, and will have more features than a compariably priced 1.5 DIN head.

As for 4ever21, I cannot address why his HU is not working... but I can say this - don't bother trying to interface with the Bose. It just ain't worth the grief.

I suggest looking at Eclipse for a HU. There has been a lot of debate lately as to how good Alpine really is. To be honest, the 7998 I currently have sounds fabulous, but Alpine has recently made it obsolete... and I am not happy with that... There have been other comments about sound quality in the cheaper units and overall durability.

Clarion was making some nice high end units... and if you want Pioneer, check their Premier line.

Rockford-Fosgate isn't bad... neither are some of the higher end JVC units. I have heard the JVC has a pretty good tuner section, but I don't have first had experience with that.

If you want to spend more, and get something really special, check out McIntosh. The look of their head unit would fit PERFECTLY into an early C4 dash. The street price seems to be about $1000.00 for the HU. You will need amps/speakers and such... but if you DIY the install yourself, you can do a near custom job, in stages, that will flat out ROCK for the cheap. Consider this, the HU, a good 2 channel amp (ArcAudio, JL Audio, Zapco, Butler) and a good pair of speakers for the front (JL Audio, Focal, CDT) you are touching a little over $2k, but you will DIY the install, saving several hundred, and you won't have some ignorant chimp taking your car apart.

Link to McIntosh HU Specs

A forum member had one in his C5, and it was one impressive sounding pieces.

I think that is my problem. My head unit works just fine, but not with the stock Bose speakers. I want to try and get them to work with the speakers for now until I can get replacements. Gonna cost like $180 for a set of 6x9 Pioneers. I know... probably not the best speaker but I like them and they're reasonalby priced.

are you using a bose adaptor?

if not, they will never work right... and if you attach the HU to the bose amps as a preamp feed, it will only eat the HU up.

I found an adapter at this site, but i'm not sure how its supposed to work. I see the 3 ribbon connector but have no idea what that 12-pin thing is for. But is that what i'd need? I never turn the head unit on cause I know it doesnt work.

This is the Pioneer DEH P47DH and can be had for under $200. Pick up some 6x9's for the rear at under a $100 and either some door speakers or 4x6 speakers for the dash pad and you are good to go. You'll have to rewire to remove the blose system but for under $400 and you have a way better sounding system than you had before. Fills the dash space perfectly as mentioned before and has all the features you could ever want.

I used the Pioneer DEH P47 DH in my 86. All of my bose equipment was in very good shape so I used the Bose adapter. I am very pleased with the sound. The Deck was just over $200.00 and the adapter was about $50.00. I bought them both through Car Domain.

If you're not going to keep the stock Bose unit, then why not bypass all that stuff? Gut the Bose speaker cabinets, adapt new off the shelf speakers to the cabinets and solder your new speaker wires directly to the new speakers. While you're at, you can run new heavier gauge wire and not have to fuss with old small gauge speaker wire. Also on my 86, I had to be particular about which head unit I got. I had the adaptor, but backspacing was an issue. Get the shortest unit, depthwise, you can find.

I still dont know where the 12 pin connector connects to on that adapter. I havent seen a 12 pin connection anywhere behind the radio. Is it deeper?
