Can't make 4x6's in dash stop rattling!!
I put some 4x6's in my dash, mounted by wood...
Tightened them. its all good, an hour later.. RATTLE RATTLe..

If i tighten them anymore, they'll rip up the dash pad in my '86
Do you think I should have plastic mounts fabricated instead? Any ideas?

If they keep loostening up, have you tried lock washers? Then again, you may be stripping the threads out of the hole. In that case, is there any way to make the hole a through hole so you can put a nut on the other side?
Are they screwed into the bottom of the dash pad? Any way to mount to the dash structure, using plywood or something?

How are you using "wood" to mount them? Is 4x6 the hole size on your car? What year is it? If it is, they should bolt in. If it isn't, you should get different speakers to fit the hole as 4x6 is notorious for not having good sound and there aren't any good quality brands available. Most people who want to use the location and put in a good system will buy seperate speakers, put the woofer part, ususally 5 1/4 " in the door, and get an adapter that will allow the tweater to mount in the 4x6 opening.
Regardless, you should use pan head screws, pan head threaded tabs(black metal) to screw into, and mount these tabs into either stock portions of the car or a plastic or metal template that fits into the stock location of the car. They should be anchored at at least all four corners.
Hope this helps

They're cerwin vega plate speakers. The midrange is seperate from the tweeter, and they sound good. There are 4x6 holes in the dash, but the speaker mounts i have for them aren't cut out, and are discontinued so I'm not cutting 'em.

They must not be mounted securely. I have difficulty with some mounting holes myself. Twisty ties work for me. I have zip ties in , but they do not hold very well, but I just gave it a shot.
If they are mounted securely let me know and i'll give you some other suggesstions.

Are you feeding them too much bass by any chance? Those small 3" midranges can't handle much bass. If so, try crossing them over if you have a head unit that can do so, or add some bass blockers.
