Default Some pretty basic questions for ya...

With everyone's help, I've got my mp3 player (not an IPOD) hooked up via the AUX-10 and COR_HAR in my '01 Z06. Thanks for all your input! First of all, I have a budget of about a grand (including install), and have already purchased (not installed yet) Alpine SPS 080a/130a's for the doors and rears. An amp and sub/box I know I'll get also, haven't picked them out. Now a question..

1. A new HU? The stock one does all I'd basically like it to, and I realize I can keep it using the PIE adapter, but looking at some of the CD/MP3 decks out there, I realize I'm missing alot. Is there really that much of a difference, light years? As I have gathered from reading the posts and product info, equalization/loudness/the ability to drive speakers at different levels, "cleaner" output.. these are all advantages that the stock HU doesn't have? BTW, I like clean, full rock and roll and keeping her stock really isn't a big deal.

Basically I'm committed to the above changes but just haven't figured out where the HU fits into the "great stereo" equation? Is a VRUM VRUM faceplate and a new-fangled deck the way to go?

Thanks to all that respond!

well... dont get a h/u based on mp3 connectivity. you dont have an ipod and from what i've heard controlling them isn't all that easy. (setting up playlists, odd querks and slow speeds). the h/u will have a cleaner signal then going through an interface but some people are happy with that setup. but you already purchased the h/u so might as well install it, right?

your budget... is that what you have left to work with? or is that 1000 minus the price of the h/u? oh...and i have a few used amps if you want to go used :-)

Nope, haven't bought the HU yet, so that grand or so is for everything. I take it none of the newer units have a mini rca plug-in for an mp3 player? Suppose I could just burn all my music onto cd's...I was just so proud of getting my current setup to work <g>....I'm a total newbie w/ amps.. I read what you guys write but just get more confused...so yeah, a used amp and some advice I'd be interested in! Thanks again!

a lot of new headunit have rca inputs, you can get an rca to mini adapter and plug that into your headphone jack on your mp3 player (or anything htat has a headphone jack). i confused the h/u for the speakers, sorry. so you have the front speakers already, correct?

Yep, front (3.5") and rears (5.5"), both Alpine. Waiting for it to warm up here so I can install and see what the sound is like sans amp and sub. I just know from previous cars an amp with a little more oommpphh to the sound would be to my liking. I'm open to suggestions. I also get your take on the RCA inputs on the back of a new HU to my mp3. If it came to that I'd just rip some cd's though. Right now with the COR-HAR and AUX-10 I'm a little spoiled. It's just I look at some of the Pioneer and Eclipse HU's and think..."That's gotta sound better then the BOSE".....

well, since you already have those speakers you probably wouldnt benefit from amping that part of the system. you'd need a good mono or two chan amp and a sub and you'd probably be happy. if you install those and still arent totally happy then you always have the option of upgrading the stock h/u. without wasting a lot of money.

OK, mono or two channel.. I'm guessing mono for the sub? What would I use the two channel for...2 subs? Sorry if it's a dumb question...

2 chan amps can be wired to drive one sub. mono (class d) is your best choice but if you came across a good deal a 2 chan amp would work as well
