Default yet another C5 stereo upgrade plan...

well I walked in here with some ideas, and now they're changing somewhat from what I've read.

to keep things simple I'm sticking with brands I've known and liked for the past 4 years in my truck......yet also seem to be liked here as well.

we're fitting all this in a 03 Z06 that probably will see a rollbar, I don't want a partition and I dont' need crazy bass, but I need a sub...

head unit - alpine iva w200....I've seen a double dins done in C5's with minor trimming....didn't forsee any problems until i read only 2v preouts...

amp - kicker zx 700.5 (85x4 and 425ish at 4 ohms on a sub) was thinking of 4 speakers and a sub, so was thinking 5 channel. Then it seems most people say in teh tight confines of a vette go with a good stage adn a sub....so I'm open to suggestions

front speakers - focal polykevlar 165 kf's 2 way (older model but love the sound the kps is an updated one.....now I'm thinking maybe 3 way?)

rear speakers - well I think I'm gonna cut these outta the mix.

sub jl 10w6 - I want a small box in the rear center well.....(I have a kicker L7 square in my truck, hits like a monster but its got a nasty flatspot the midranges just can't keep up with above 100 hz..)

most of all I want simple and loud but sq not spl boombastic I've done enough of that crap in the past.

give me some thoughts guys..

165 k2p's would be a good bet. Upgraded voice coil and will play lower than the 165 k2's will. Get yourself some sound deadening and do the door skins and inner panels and they will play down to 80hz pretty easily with some clean power. While only going 2 ways you really cannot ask the midbass/range to play any lower than that, the sound will get muddy. You could also go to a slightly bigger driver if you stay 2 way (IE 7 or 8"). I am running a Focal Polykevlar 7" midbass right now and I am very happy. It is playing 63hz to 400hz on 24 db slopes. Midbass at the front of the car is awesome. I ran them 2 way while tuning for a bit but had to cross them over at 80hz and 3.5k, they just would not play down to 63hz in 2 way mode.

Rest of the gear looks pretty solid, the 2v outs hurt a bit, you could go external crossover, JL clean sweep etc to boost your signal to your amp if you felt that you needed to. At the end of the day, the less gain you have to run on your amp the less distortion you will generally encounter. A higher voltage signal gives a stronger signal for the amp to amplify, therefore creating the same or more volume with less gain/work from the amp. Generally results in cleaner sound.

i have an audiocontrol 24xs linedrive/x-over that i used in my car pc installation for about a month or two. I upgraded to a better soundcard so i pulled the 24xs out. While it was in it sounded great. I would probably go the same route if i were in your situation.

(let me know if you want to purchase mine off of me)

and i agree with fej

well in my research since posting...

those vrumvrum plates.....those would take the midbass and midrange and then I just have to mount a tweeter? and I could run serious power that way....say 85 a piece to the midbasses...then 85 to the tweet and midrange adn then drop a 10 in the center cargo area?

I love the damn kickers in my truck, they run ice cold under the entire rear seat linked up end to end.....with little to no ventilation...and clear and clean as hell...barely cranked up at all

was thinkin of just dropping the vette at a shop but talking to a few of them.....I know I'm doing it myself again, lol.

85w midbass and 85w mid/tweet would be plenty. I have 70w midbass and 70 mid/tweet with the midbass gain at about 5% and the mid/tweet at minimum and it is as loud as you would want to listen to it with 15 left on the headunit volume

You would need a headunit with a 3 way crossover built in, plus some passive crossovers of some sort to make it all work. Or you could just get a external processor/crossover of some sort to handle most of it. PM me if you want to chat about system make up/set up
