i went ahead today and installed a new pioneer headunit in my 01 z06 along with a hard wired v1 radar and pioneer portable xm unit. i used the soundgate piece for the headunit and grab my igniton power source from the passenger floor like in the faq section[yellow-orange-black] wires. isued the switched power yelow wire to power the radio/radar/and xm and the black wire thats there to ground the radar and the xm. the radio grounds are near the key cylinder all together to a 10mm bolt. all works great.
now i went for a ride to enjoy my new tunes and soon as i hit 65mph the car died and wouldnt rev up at all it would just idle. i shut it off and couldnt restart it for ten minutes. then i turned off the radio to see if it had to do with it and eventually it started up and got a smooth idle and was able to haul *** down the road. it went back to normal.
where does those 3 wires in the passenger floor go to and am i overloading the yellow wire ?or is the black ground wire a bad choice also? the car was in competion mode and seemed to die down after any hard/quick shifting. just wondering if the radio/radar /xm caouldve interfered at all?
hmm, i've never heard anyone use the ground wire (not 100% sure it was a ground wire either) to take the load off that yellow wire i would place a realy in there and then use a heaftier supply line to give it constant power (let the relay switch it on and off) you could run the wire directly from the battery to the relay, having the yellow wire switch it (it will draw milliamps as aposed to what all the other components are drawing). I'm guessing that the real problem lies in the ground though but; again, not 100% sure.
last thing. when you installed the headunit did you listen to it for a while with out the car running? I had some funky sh__ happen on my car because i had a week battery. my engine would go into 'reduced power mode'. that is another thing you may want to look into.
battery couldve been week from listen to it too long without car running. it felt like a traction control/reduced power. car would coast but couldnt get onit or it would die down. no cel lights either. total peak load on the yellow wire is only 1 amp for radar/2 amp for xm and 7.5 amp for radio. is that to much for that wire? maybe the black wire i used for ground could be the problem. used my meter to verify those 3 wires before install. seems to me those wires are for a nonexisting part not installed and gave 12v switched and ground for whatever it may be for.
some of you guys must know the answer too the origin of those 3 wires? it didnt do it today so ill drive it more and see if it does it again.
hmm, since it's not reoccuring that leads me to believe it is the battery. same thing happened to me. our cars get grumpy if we dont feed it with a good battery. I actually never looked into the acc. current draw on aftermarket h/u's i always thought they were lower then 7.5 amps, learn something new everyday!
dunno know about the alternator, just speaking from experience and from what i read when i was researching my problem. it's not uncommon. if that doesnt fix it, next thing i'd probably suggest is upgrad teh big 3
