So I finally decided to do some minor upgrades to the speakers - new 3 1/2's for the doors and 6 1/2's for the rears. Passenger side fits, but on the driver side, the magnet is hitting.
Looks like where the fuel fill passage comes through protrudes just a bit more into the area behind where the speaker goes. So my question is, has anyone run into this before?
I thought about shimming the speaker out, but then I'm thinking the grill won't fit right. Can I get in there with a grinder and clear a little space? It's only off like 1/4"
OOOOOOOO what fun that was!!!!!!!!!! I put a set of Diamond D-6 6 1/2's in mying.....What I did was cut a square out of the support then weld a box back in....There is enough room but you have to be carefull you can't make the box too deep, you still have to put the fill hose back in. Mying is just touching it....
wow...all for the sake of rear speakers? do what i did...unhook the stock ones and dont use rears
seriously, the rears are probably needed for the spl if you're keeping mostly stock. I'm not sure about an easy fix, but wiz1500's advice is sound..heh..get it..sound HAHAHA ....slow day at work, sorry. woooooo

I think I'd try to get a spacer to fit between the speaker and the speaker mounting area before I'd start grinding on the car. A 1/4" spacer shouldn't be hard to find.

Mine are Diamonds too, go figure I think i'll try spacing that side before i start actually cutting.
Scott - thanks for the confirmation on the sound advice... Was a long day (aren't all Mondays?) so it was actually pretty funny
Wiz - you say weld, it looked like it was all plastic, was that a figure of speech, like you used JBWeld?

Be very careful about getting the speaker to close to the grill....Make sure you no how much movement the cone has past the edge of the ring and how much space you have left.. I have a set of alpine's on the shelf that were mounted to close....It all looked good till they were played....The cone is wrinkled and split. I didn't no what that little anomaly was when my truck would give a good hit........as you can tell I found it when they came apart...And the WIZ got wizer......

If you stick a magnet in there you will see It's metal. It's realy not that big of a job if you take the fuel door off and remove the plastic liner. Just make sure you no where your sparks are going while grinding...... let me see if I can find some Pic. for you ..I see your on line hang on for a MIN. and let me see what I can find..
Here is the only one I can find right now... I thought I had a few shots of the door and stuff off...O well you get the point..
If you drill 4 holes then use a little air saw. you are golden. Just weld a box up to fit your hole and weld it in...Hope this helps...good luck.

Is the car a coupe, fixed roof, or 'vert? If it's a coupe, the speakers are actually 6.75", not 6.5. Installing the larger spearker, if appropriate, might move the speaker's framework just enough to make the install possible.
I dont know how much room there is between the speaker and grill, but what I plan on doing of course will proly involve mods to the grill is cut a ring spacer, but make it thicker on one side so it shoots the sound more foreward than straight across. This should solve the depth problem, but again will proly require some mods to how the grill sits, but will also help in imaging since the sound will be directed more to the ears depending on how much angle you put on it.

Durrr - of course, the speaker trying to stick to it would have told me that... sorry, I was REALLY tired when i was asking questions last night :bb
Thanks so much for the pic too! You guys rule - as usual!
6.75? why doesn't somebody tell me these things! I thought i had researched it all enough ahead of time... doh!
