Default Question about stealth subboxes in C5

Thinking of getting on of the sealth subboxes that hold a single 10" for the back of my C5. My question is about putting the stock cover back on. How much does it hurt the performance of the sub to have it covered? Seems it would really hurt the performance with having so little air to push. Is the flush-mount with a grill over the speaker a better option?

If you are getting a authintic JL Stealthbox it comes with a grill to cover the sub box and looks stock... It has a grill so the sound can go through...

I was planning on getting one from subthump. Do you know if you can get just the cover from JLAudio?

The cover from JL will not work with a subthump box. You could use the stock cover however you will seriously decrease your bass performance if you close it up entirely. You could leave it flipped up to help some, but the clearance there is awful close IMO and you may hit during full excursion (hit the hinge on the cover).

I had one made for mine with a vented portion over the top of the sub and it does hurt the sound a little bit, coupled with the partition I am definitely losing some DB but it works for me

Here is what I did and it works very well.

I made a new cover out of very thin aluminum diamond plate that I had left over from another project.

I also used the original factory latches.

Why wouldn't the one from JL work with the subthump box? The JL one is a direct replacement for the stock cover, and with the subthump box, you can use the stock cover...

From seeing both boxes, not side by side at the same time, it looked to me that the JL one was a different shape to conform to the shape of the box better. I could certainly be wrong however as I have never held my stock cover side by side with one. I have a 1" raised cover on mine atm and it is working well. It may just work for ya bro

That is a BEAUTIFUL stealth installation. Thanks for the pics. If I put a sub/amp back there, that is EXACTLY how I will want to do it.

I agree that cover looks awesome. I almost would like to see the diamond plate shown off, but covering it with carpet really helps keep the trunk looking clean.

I was wondering a couple things. Where did you get the carpet? Where did you get the two lock things that hold the cover in place? Thanks for the help.

Thanks! The locks are out of the factory lid, they have a push style release on the back of them. I used the stock lid as a template for the overall pattern. For the latches, I traced out the factory holes where the latches came out onto a piece of poster board and then traansferred it to the new panel. The latch has kind of an odd shape. I got the carpet at a car stereo shop, it lets the sound pass right through. I have also covered the amp up also since I took these pictures. All of the amp you see now is the black cooling fins.

Thanks for the hints...I'll go looking for some factory style locks. I'll check some stores around here for the carpet. I have my sub installed and just need to make the cover to finish up the project.

Dave, You should be able to order the latches from your local Chevy Parts Department. Good Luck!
