I'd like to do a 3 way system with mid-bass in lower, mid near doorhandle, and tweeter in a-pillar. My feeling is that this would have the highest sound stage. I'm just not sure what will fit in these locations. I know I should take the door apart to find out, but how much room is available in the mid-mount location?
If 3 way not doable, I will concede a 2 way component set.
Looking at several entries from the Focal line... 180w (will a 7" fit?), 165w (6.5"), 165k2p, and 165v3.

I am looking at some 9inch PG that were made by Morel where Bose subs are and some alpine type x by handle and tweets in A pillar

Ended up installing JS Audio XR 3 way comonents and an amp in rear cubby. Plan to add custom fiberglass stealthbox to rear similar to JL stealth but custom made for Convertible.
BTW- had rears rewired for stereo and put JL two ways in the rear and eliminated center.

I'm also looking at the Focal 165K 3 ways. With the way the Bose are mounted you have a 10" opening at the bottom but the mid is actually mounted to the door panel. Here's a couple of pics to give you the idea:
My plan is to put the tweet & midbass in the 10" opening and the midrange in the door panel.

That would certainly be ideal from an imaging standpoint, but unfortunately not physically possible with the speakers I'm considering.
To answer 97C5's question more specifically... any of those Focal setups would work in the opening. For the 180W you'd put the 7" in the sub opening and the tweet where the mid is, same would make sense for the 165 2 way. For the 165 3 ways you'd have to pair the tweet down below and put the mid in the door. Any way you do it you'll have to make some sort of mounting frame.

I used th XR JL Audio 3 ways and made plates as well as plated the door opening where the piece of rubber is to basically enclose door, also used the rear plate as mounting location for the crossover
Komoman, if you've still got the door off could you measure the depth/height of the 3 1/2" speaker and the magnet's diameter. Thanks
Sorry, I don't still have the panel off. I did measure the depth of the driver from the back of the plate, it's 1.75" deep. The pocket in the door where the magnet goes is 1.125" deep. I didn't remove the mid so I can't tell you what the actually depth is, as it's obviously not the sum of those 2 numbers, but I would guess it's in the 2.25"-2.5" range. I didn't measure the diameter.
In my C6 I have 2 4" MB Quarts Coaxial in door panels with X-overs and in the rears JL Audio 5.25" XR Coaxials with X-overs and in the doors 8" kicker SSMB subs all ran from a JL Audio ES4500 6-channel amp. On the stock amp I have running a 3.5 MB Quart Coaxial for the center dash. Stock HU with PAC GM24.

That's a pretty nice setup. Very close to what I was thinking of doing. The 4" MB's screw into the stock location without modification?
Was the 8" Kickers the only woofers you could find with the right mounting depth?
They make a 3 way set as well. Very natual and smooth with excellent midbass. I completed the system with a 3.5" Boston center channel and a 10" Image Dynamics sub in a JL box. All run from a PPI 1000.4 amp. Some pics of the install:

How does it sound?
With the 4" mb quarts I used a adapter to make the 4" fit on the 3.5" location. The kicker mounting depth is about 2 1/4", I believe you have about an 3" before hitting the glass.
I have the 8" mid bass set at high pass setting because on low pass on high volume the 8's distort since there is not no enclosure even though they are free air, free air subs to have a limit of capabilities.
It seems the 4" mb quarts handle well with the rear 5.25 JL's but I still want it a bit more sensitivity coming from the front so I think I plan on changing the 8" mid range and get 6 1/2 coaxials so I can have an extra tweeter.
