Newly installed sub sounds stifled
Dave cant wait to see and hear ur car
but, the wow factor of the three 12" subs gets the young ladies
Pentavolvo,
four 6X9s in the tailgate? Are those for demo only? Otherwise, what the heck? Also, one 4-channel for all those speakers
Without a doubt, that will be sickeningly loud
It sounds like he likes plenty of bling just like that loser with all that blue fiberglass
I guess this thread is hijacked...were is that mod?
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I designed up an Nnational IASCA winning Mercedes with 12 midrange & tweeters plus 2 10" subs all running off a single 4-channel 50x4 PPI amp and a 2-way electronic crossover.
The two subs were off the rear two channels of the amp that were bridged and fed from the low pass of the xover and the 12 mid/high drivers were off the two front channels of the amp fed from the high pass of the xover. Between the front two channels of the amp and the 12 speakers I built a custom passive xover network that controlled each of the 12 speakers.
Realize that impedance is also frequency dependent so that while there may have been 12 speakers on those two amp channels only some were playing midbass, some midrange, and others playing high frequencies. That fact alone helped keep the load on the amp in check. Even at the xover overlap points (12 db/octave passive xover) the amp never saw less than 1.5 ohm impedance load on those front channels.
The system not only sounded incredibly good it got so loud it would drive you out of the car if that's what you wanted and I had the amp gains set at only approx 60% gain to keep the system well below clipping levels. I always tuned the competition cars and set gains with an oscilloscope to make sure I knew where the clipping point was and set the amp gains about 5%-10% below that so it was safe for whoever decided to crank on the volume control.
but I seriously doubt that is how is wiring his mids/high considering some of those drivers are 6X9s.
Yes, in competitions I remember several vehicles wired the way you described. Even one company (Stinger??) made a device so you could run higher ohm speakers yet still present the amp a low ohm load. To me, that device just ate power. I don't think it ever caught on. I can remember one SPL competitor running like 50 5" drivers in a series/ parallel wiring off one amp.
I still have my PPI amps from 1991, one of which is a 50X4. I know at that time PPI was making "cheater" amps. None of mine were those though. Alpine, PPI, MB Quart, and JL Audio was the rage back then.
I think people who pay a $1000 for a stamp or a coin is
People think I am
for paying a $1000 for a single amp or a set of componets. To each their own.
I'm also a member of the DSMtalk web site (I own two Talon TsiAWDs) and many members think I'm a dick since I own a Vette. Well, I am a dick
but don't like it when people just assume I'm one because of the car I drive. On the other hand, if I brought my Talon to a Vette gathering, the Vette crowd would assume I'm a import sport compact car loser. Okay, I'm a loser too :o
.PS One of my worst pet peeves is when someone calls my Talon an import. It was assemblied in Illinios. Sure, it has foriegn parts in it, so does our Vettes. I was amazed when I painted the calipers/rotors on the Vette. They were made down under and Brazil
Another pet peeve, when people say imports are made better. I've had so many people say my Talon (or Plymoth Laser) is junk and the Eclipse is a much better car. Morons, the cars are the same, made on the same assembly line (Diamond Star Motors) and by the same people. The only exceptions are some trim pieces
Back to audio, USA make the best subwoofers
officially hi-jacked now! Sorry Duramax
but I seriously doubt that is how is wiring his mids/high considering some of those drivers are 6X9s.

Such GREAT advice for installers out there

BTW, it's the days of Alpine, JL Audio, Quart, PPI, Streetwires, etc which is when I was heavy in the industry. First as a factory rep for most of the above mentioned companies (plus a lot more - we rep'd about a dozen lines of product) than as a manager of a number of high-end car audio shops specializing in top end and competition systems).
Back in those days if you wanted a TOP system it almost always had alpine or Eclipse HU, PPI amps, JL subs, Quart speakers, and wired with Streetwires.
I've been out of the industry for many years now so I am not "up" with a lot of the newer lines and product models out but at least basic system design and acoustic theory stays the same
Focal componets and Xtant amps started to replace MB quart and PPI in the later 90's
When did Eclipse come out? I was thinking like 1993?
In the 80's it was Alpine, Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood
, Clarion, and Pioneer. Before all that, Jensen and Craig
Sound competitions were not even going yet, except for the "my stereo is better than yours"
comments. The first sound competition I remember a guy had a C3 with one of those monster 4-channel 250 watts per channel Rockford Fosgate amps. I swear I thought his back window was going to pop off
Those amps were over a grand$, allot of money in the 80's
check out my white Talon and see if you remember it in the sound off circuit

If you hadn't noticed, I'm bored at work
Of coarse the JL subs were in a Isobarik fashion, totally 90's. I still have it all but the JL subs, they were stolen. They were the rare 15W5's, if you remember the W5s were JL's first competition subs. I had 4 of them in my little red Talon TsiAWD. I also had 3 sets of MB Quarts, 2 PPI amps, Streetwires, and dual batterys.
