I'm considering getting a 12" Alpine Type -X sub (Alpine SWX-1242D) with the Alpine MRP-M650 amp to give it some juice. Is this the nest combo for this set up as far as installing a sub? Does a cargo mat on top help or hurt? Will keeping the headunit hurt to bad to keep it? I want it to look stock as far as the head unit. I had all Alpine Type R in my old car a while back and was pretty happy. I figured Type X is a step up and so is the vette
By the way, any special adapters of wires that I would need is greatly appreciated. I'm more of a performance mod guy but I do like a nice sound system. Thanks!
To keep the stock head unit, you will need a Line out converter, which you can get from best buy or pretty much anyone that sells car audio.
Im not sure how it will sound on our cars with the bose, but I will be finding out shortly!
I also will be installing a Type x in my c5 but I will be putting it into a fiberglass enclosure. Just a heads up on the power thing, these things are power hungry subs and I wouldnt recommend less than a 1k watts. Although Your 600 will probably sound fine for you.
This sub is a lot different from the Type R you had. The output on the R's are a lot more but the Type X has a lot better sound quality!
I take it from your screen name that this is going into a C5. I just finished adding a 10" MTX sub and amp to my C5.
Retaining the factory HU is fine if you just want to add a sub. I think upgrading the HU is a good thing to do when upgrading the main speakers.
Get yourself a PAC AOEM-VET1 adapter. This will plug into the stock wiring behind the factory HU and give you two sets of RCA's. Then run a power wire from the battery, an RCA cable, and remote turn-on wire to the amp. Ground the amp to a bolt that holds the seats in place.
I'm not familiar with Alpine subs or amps (mostly use MTX myself) so someone else may comment. I bet it would work nicely. I built my own box from plans that Scott_FX sent to me. It fits right in the cargo area.
I don't think putting a mat over the sub will be good. I have a Lloyds mat but haven't tried putting it over the sub. I can only image having a mat over the sub will stifle the output since the sub won't be able to move air as easily. And moving air is what a sub does best.
You can pick any sub that you like. You just have to make sure that your sub matches your subbox specs. or vise versa. Say your sub needs .61cuft of air space. you have to build a box to that air space requirement also accounting for the amount of space that the sub itself will take up. Get the adapter. It will save you some headaches and you wont have to cut into wires. Just splice into one wire for your remote power. The PAC Aoem-vet1.

Not to hijack the thread, but where do you guys purchase the Pac AOEM-Vet1 adaptor from? I searched online, but didn't find any stores that I know anything about with the product so I didn't feel all that comfortable purchasing with them. Thanks.

logjam i think is the name of one or ebay. They have great deals on them sometimes, if they have them. Logjam is over priced i think. I bought mine half that price of logjam, but the place i got it from no longer carries that model Local stereo shops should be able to order you one up
I just got mine two weeks ago from Logjam. It came really quickly and nicely boxed. Like DPG said, they are expensive but I couldn't find the adapter anywhere else.
Sometimes you will find members here selling them. If you can't wait, I say get it from Logjam. In the long run, you'll forget about the 60 bucks when you are enjoying the slamming sub. Plus you can just unplug it and go back to stock if you sell the car.
I have the Alpine Type-X 10" sub powered by the V12-M650 and it is a great combo. Very tight and verey accurate, and the sub can handle any wattage you throw at it. Check prices on eBay for both units. You can get them for about 30-40% less than retail.
I usually get all my stuff from ikesound.com. I'm not sure if yall have heard of it but they have killer prices!!...Oh, thanks for all the input guys. I really like this forum.

The Type-X subs are pretty deep, cargo mat almost isn't an option. I had a 10 in Type X (which, BTW, is just sitting around if you're interested) in there before and the box top was over the rest of the cargo level (i'm counting grille, etc.) You're going to need more power though, the subs are rated at 1000W RMS, the amp you're looking at doesn't have enough ***** to safely power it without going into distortion. (This of course is assuming you like to turn it up....as you are getting the biggest sub Alpine offers....don't burn it out by not feeding it well.) A perfect match from the Alpine offerings is the PDX-1.1000 http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/product...del=PDX-1.1000
If you have any other qtns, feel free to drop me a line. Also, you can take a gander at my own 2004 if you meander back to College Station. Thanks, and Gig 'Em. -- Chris
