Default thinking of removing nav headunit from C6

What complications will I find if I decide to pull the unit and replace it with an in dash screen. Are there any car specific functions that require the factory radio to work, and what work arounds are there? I don't use the nav at all, have onstar but it is not activated, and plan on replacing the Bose speakers with new components and a JL stealth box in the rear. The only good thing about the headunit is the touch screen/mp3 capability to me.

I remember seeing a thread where somebody had buried a non-NAV stock unit in a rear cubbie in order to keep the HUD working. That would be the one feature that could be a problem for you but I'm not sure if that's necessary or not. Probably is or the guy wouldn't have gone through that hassle....

Well I'll tell ya what ...

You have options -

I you want to change all the Components and leave the stock radio in there - you can use the Alpine VHub Pro- or the JL Cleansweep -

Both work well - and will get you clean usable signal to build from ..

Then - NavTV can modify the radio to display the new functions on your NAV screen

Just a thought -

Kind of a HUGE waste to take out NAV you have already - just to put it right back in with aftermarket

He would have kept the stock non-Nav unit in his car so he wouldn't lose his chimes and OnStar features. Those run through the stock HU.

The stock Nav units have an arrow feature that works in tandem with the HUD by displaying your turns in the HUD but the HUD will still operate just fine without the Nav unit in there.

If you don't have, or use OnStar and don't mind not hearing the cars chime sounds then you can replace the stock Nav if you wish.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't sure.

I know that I've seen an aftermarket module that can be had where you plug the stock harness into it and it has a speaker which you mount somewhere in the dash which will let you hear the chimes. The 24 pin connector on the Vette seems like it's pretty standard GM, that might work.

true I've thought of going this way, but I'm interested in getting a video screen in dash. I had one in my last car, and am missing it now. Is there a way to run a video input into the stock unit?

If you want a video screen to watch DVD's and such you will need to go aftermarket. The stock NAV unit won't do that for you.

I think this is what you are looking for....Pioneer AVIC Z1

There is a way to get the Stock NAV to play movies / rear camera

You need to use the Alpine Vhub Pro - Add an Alpine DVD Player and POW - you are done .

For more info ...

Edit: you cannot get the OEM Nav to play movies by itself- it does require a modification and the addition of a DVD player

techguy,
Is it possible to add a video input from a PC to the factory NAV? I can't imagine the touch screen is hackable but I have a buddy who wants to put a CarPC in his new Z06, we were thinking integrated trackball for mouse input.

Thanks for the info!

He could do that but he should also be warned that the screen resolution from the stock Nav unit would not be good. It wasn't designed to display video.
