Default C6 MP3 Functionality Question

I've been having some trouble getting the MP3 player functionality working in my '07 Coupe.

I'm not unfamiliar with technology and have tried a variety of CD-R media types, colors, burn speeds, file naming schemes, folder structures, and none of it has made any difference.

I place the CD containing the MP3's in the drive, the system says that it's loading the disc, and then a few moments later it says 'No Valid Disc Available'.

I've read the manual and tried all the things it suggests, but wondered if there was some sort of 'trick' that I wasn't aware of that was needed to get it to work properly?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I'm more than happy to answer any questions / try any suggestions you guys may have.

Thanks!

What software did you use to create the CD? I used iTunes and it worked with a generic CD-R.

The head will only read MP3's, not WMA's or AAC or m4a music from Windows Media Player or iTunes. Both programs have the option to rip as MP3. Also it only does ID3v1 so you need to select that option in iTunes when you burn.

Knew this existed.. had to go searching to find it.

Some pics are missing but the info there is good.

Actually, I just burned an entire CD using WMA and it plays fine in my stock HU. Also, if I already have the MP3 on my computer, I just drag and drop it to my CDR media and it plays fine too. Otherwise, like Komoman said, you can always use Windows Media Player or iTunes.

Interesting, I hadn't tested it myself but it was always reported here the stock head (I have NAV) would only play MP3, not WMA. I have a CD-RW full of WMA's I use in my C3's Alpine, I'll have to pop it into the C6 and see what it does.

Hey guys,

Software: I inserted a blank CD into the CD drive and opened it in Windows Explorer, dragged and dropped the files into the CD, and then selected the "Write these files to the CD" option.

Format: All files are in the MP3 format and have a full compliment of ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags.

I'm not a fan of iTunes at all (even though I have an iPod, heh), so I've never even bothered to use it as a way to put MP3's on a CD. Hopefully that's not the only option.

Been a while since I used the built-in burning in XP... after it burns the file does it ask you to close the disc? Might not say it in that fashion, may ask you something like "are you finished putting files on the CD" or something like that. Odds are if the session isn't finalized then the CD player won't be able to read the disc.

Default MP3 problems

I am having problems with MP3s playing correctly on my 07. I am trying to play the same MP3's that worked fine in my 06. The problem is some songs play over and over...
I have tried to advance to the next song with the seek button and the same song starts over again, BUT, the song number is listed goes up/down as I push the button.

???????

There's an MP3 CD thread this morning in C6 General. I asked about '07's and MP3 and there's a guy for whom it works just fine so it's not looking like a defect in the head.

One thing about CD players you need to keep in mind, MP3 or otherwise, they are much pickier than CD drives in computers. The generally will only read the first session on a CD and the session must be closed. So when you burn your MP3's make sure you burn them all at the same time. That repeat track could be that maybe you only burned one song in the first session and that's all the CD drive is seeing.

These disc's that worked fine in both of 06's. They will play fine for a couple of songs then repeat itself. It is not always the same song. All disc where closed and burned at the same time using Nero 7.

Did you see the note in General about keeping the file names (not the tags) to 22 characters?

The session is appropriately closed in my case.

The names of the MP3 file names are actually just two characters, so I doubt I'm hitting the 22 character cap.

It's really quite strange. Silly picky stock head units!

I have an 06 Coupe with Bose/Nav. After burning 15-20 coasters with iTunes I finally got my MP3 CD to work - I have 158 songs, 650MB in four folders. I used Sonic RecordNow! and was able to leave the file names longer than 22 characters, and used ID3-TagIT to make sure the v1.1 tag information was there (copied it over from the existing v2.x). For the first 10-12 CDs I was getting weird filenames and folder names in the Track Select screens on the Nav screen, until I changed the CD file system under Advanced Data settings to ISO Level 2. The other settings (ISO Joliet and ISO Joliet+UDF) did not work for me. Now everything works - ID3 tags (artist, song, album), file names and folder names. This is superior to the iPod interface, and 650MB is quite a bit of music!!!

Whew! Time for a beer...

OOPS: Correction. Files with a name (not counting the .mp3 expension) longer than 27 characters dont show up on the list (28 maybe, but I didnt have any songs with 28 characters). For the geeks out there I used ID3-TagIT to export the song list to Excel, used the LEN function to count the filename (not extension) characters, and went back to the car to see - files with 27 characters (Girls Just Want to Have Fun) show up. With 29, 30 characters, they do not. Sooooo, off to the races to chop those names. I am using a utility called Lupas Rename 2000 which make this a LOT easier.

Well, it looks like iTunes works just fine for me, as the CD I just created worked fine in the car.

I guess that means I have a reason to keep iTunes around now. :\
