I have a chance to get a used AVIC-N1 for a decent price.
My question is: What all shopuld be with it?
Head unit
Brain unit
Misc cables
Is there anything else?
I presume that the GPS, and vehicle dynamics are part of the brain, and not a seperate unit.
Anyone have an owners manual they could fax to me?
I really dont have a need to watch DVDs in the car, but I've been told that you need to disable the "motion sensor" to have the GPS work while moving as well.
How hard is it to disable?
Ive heard nothjing but good things about the units. Is there anything specific I should look for?
Looks like they force you to register, but here's a link to the N1 page where you can find the Owner's Manual, Installation Manual and "Other" Manual (whatever that is) for download as PDF.
No matter what model you end up getting there is an easy way to bypass the safetys so all functions will work while driving. The vehicle dynamics are all part of the brain unless you get the Z1 i believe that one has no brain bax and is self contained. But teh connections come off of the brain box oyu just need to hook up the automotive 3 constant 12, switched 12, and ground. If you havce a backup camer a this is where you would plug it in to. If you have any questions on wiring the unit or "other" wiring questions PM me. I install these daily at work.

I disagree on the "disable" on the N2, N3 and Z1. They have gyroscopes and know when you are moving above 15mph - the e-brake ground mod works for some functions, but does not bypass the DVD movie in motion lockout - nor does it allow you to change destinations on the fly while in motion.
The "solder mod" is all over the 'Net - but I have yet to meet anyone that has actually done it themselves - they only repeat the old fable.
Also, if you upgrade your D1 or D2 to the new Map software, your old e-brake bypass mods stop working....
i think i have devised a bypass that should work with the newer software. i tested it and it works in theory i just have to build a circuit to perform the function. all you need to do is find a way of grounding the ebrake lead on and off about every 2 seconds.

We talked about that a while ago Scott. A 555 or 556 timer circuit should do it. Unfortunately I'm too swamped rebuilding my car these days to spend the time to build the circuit board.
We do these head units in cars every day and i have done a few that were bypassed so you can watch movies while driving you just have to make sure that you have the right wires hooked up. Sometimes you have to mess with it like on some units you have to run a jumper rca to make the video out come in you reverse camera and put a switch on it to switched 12 and it activates the backup camera function and that you can have video on in gear....not sure which one exaclty you guys would like to bypass but between the 6 guys in our shop im sure we can ifgure it out for you. Just pm me.
