Playing around with the side compartments!
Well, I decided to play around with some fiberglass on the side compartments in the C5. I actually had available the " perfect " mold so to speak, lol, as it was cut out of a wrecked C5, which made things a little easier than actually using fiberglass down in my car with the carpet. This is the third layer here in the pic, so it isn't complete yet. I also just cut out a side cover and mounted a Diamond Audio 8" as I really want to see how it will sound without being in a actual box. What I'm really going to do is to compare a fiberglass side box to just a sub mounted on a side cover and see how big the difference will be. I know there will be some difference, but I want to see exactly how much. Yeah one will leak air and the other will be airtight, but these fiberglass boxes are so time consuming, that if it is not that big a difference then I will just use these covers, lol, until I get more time on my hands. I'm sure there are other ways to mount the side sub plates to where it would be airtight, but it would be a permanent fix and I don't want that right now.
Here are a couple of pics of where I started on the project.

Now I am waiting on my other Diamond Audio 8" for the other side compartment!

Lol! Doesn't look like much here, but it's coming along. In these little side enclosures, fiberglass is a pain in the a$$ to work with to try and get the corners and creases right. There are bolts sticking in the bottom and on the side of these compartments, so the fiberglass had to accomodate these, so the box will slide in and around the bolts. These are not fun to do,lol. I'm debating other ideas, so I'm just tinkering right now. And yes, this fiberglass matt can cause some serious itching!
How much space are you getting from these? Kinda curious as I picked up a couple of the eu700's to mess around with. Going to throw one of them in my door this weekend and see how it does IB vs my Focal 7" polykev.
