Never have heard them in a car environment, but about 5 years back when we went to the HT show in NYC we heard a pair of Red Rose bookshelf speakers hooked to nothing but a tube amp and a Sony SACD player. They had planar tweets and they sounded absolutely WONDERFUL, among the best we heard at the show(the full JM Labs Grand Utopia setup is kinda tough to top!). IIRC, planar tweets are power hungry little buggers. I also wonder if their wide dispersal pattern would work in a car environment. It has obvious advantages in that it's difficult to get tweeter placement right for directional units, but the sound might be too diffused to overcome environmental noise. Interesting stuff.

Sony has new components for cars that have ribbon tweeters, and they sound amazing.

I am curious, if the planar tweets are so power hungry, why hook them up to a tube amp that can't be putting out more than, say, 30 watts per channel?

Butler? Those things ROCK! I had one before... regret selling it, now.

when I was referring to tube amps, I was refering to true analogue amps, not the modern hybred amps that use mosfet front ends and the tubes act as output filters.

I wanted to double-check my facts before I answered this.... tube amps put out craploads of VOLTAGE, which helps drive the planars.
