Default C4 Sill Speaker Enclosure

I have 2 sets of Rainbow Germanium 6.5 components coming in for my '94. I'm planning on making enclsoures for the front and rear speakers to accomodate the 6.5's. The only problem is I don't think the front enclosures will have enough volume for a sealed enclosure to work right with these speakers. The Rainbows are made for infinite baffle use, so the only idea I had was to seal the enclosure to the sill panel and cut about a 3 inch hole into the sill panel to make it an infinite baffle.

Is this worth the trouble of hacking up my car or should I just keep it sealed. Any other suggestions?

DON'T CUT THE SILL!!

That is structural... you cut that and all sorts of bad things could happen.

You can build up an enclosure that will allow the speakers to be free air without going to that extent.

I am pretty sure I have a link to doing a 6.5" install in the C4 Audio FAQ... I will double check. But someone did just that recently and made a lovely enclosure.

I don't see where to vent the enclosure to make it free air unless it was open to the inside of the car (and I don't think that would sound very good).

I looked at the C4 audio faq and can't find any examples of a free air enclosure. Can you explain how people have been making them?

free air is relative... as long as the enclosure isn't sealed, it's free... so you will get enough air to satisfy the whimsy of the driver.

Believe me, even the freest of free requires some constraint.

I bought 5 1/4" components for mine as I was worried about the size. Now that I've installed them, I see that I could have fit the 6 1/2" units pretty easily. Depth can be an issue, though. These Polk db5250 are listed at 2 5/16" mounting depth and I don't think you can go much deeper. The db series 6 1/2" ones are listed at only 2", so they shouldn't be a problem at all. I chose to use the original mount plates and adapt them to the new speakers.

As you can see, there is plently of room below the current speaker to accommodate the 6 1/2". It just would need to have it center lowered a bit. I screwed and epoxied the 1/4" harboard to the face of the speaker mount and drilled my holes for the components. The are centered in the speaker openings of the sill cover. A different location would probably require altering the plastic portion of the sill cover to allow sound out.

Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for... I'm glad I didn't start hacking away at the sill panel.
