Is a JL8W7 too small for a vette? I have MB Quart Prem's for mids and highs, JL8W7 and a JL500.5 amp. I see boxes from subthump for 1 10 or 2 10's or 1 12. What do you guys think? If I go with a bigger sub, then I'll have to get another amp or sell this one and get two amps, one for components and one 500w + for the bigger subs. Thanks
A JL500.5 is a 5 channel amp, 100x2, 25x2, and 250x1. Its basically a perfect amp for 1 8" sub. If I were to sell it and the sub I'd have to buy two amps and two subs...
I'm sure he'll make you a box for a 8". If not, member Audio Dave will For SQ, 250 watts rms and that 8" will get along fine. The JL 8W7 can kick allot of 12" models out there.
In my old 00 Silvy Ext Cab, I had the Alpine CDA9811, MBQuart Premium's, JL8W7, JL500.5 and a cap. Along with dynamat. I used to compete in sound quality shows and would get second place every time. Only because I wanted a stealth set up and that made my stage too low. I know the 8 will be loud enough, just not sure if its the way to go. I pm'd Dave already, just patiently waiting a reply. Thanks
I've not run a single 8", but I have a pair of Rockford FNQ 8" in my 88. It sounds good and hits hard(for 8's), but am going with a single 12 in my new project for more low end punch. It all depends on what sound your looking for. I'm sure you saw the big debate on speaker performance acording to size.
Yeah I saw the debate and don't want to bother with another one. I listen to all sorts of music, rap, r&b, alternative, country. Just depends on what I'm in the mood for. The JL500.5 has a remote bass controller that I mount close to me, so if I feel the song needs more bass I just turn it up a little. I'm trying to skimp a little and not have to buy anything else for the time being. I haven't even picked up the vette yet, so I'm already planning. Next weekend
I don't see why not. As long as you know each coil is getting 250wts. I read an article where the tester from car audio was testing the new Pioneer 5102 and the only way he could get enough power was to run 1000wts to each coil from 2 amps.
What if I bought a JL 250.1 and got a JL10W7 and ran my 250 watts from my 500.5 to one VC and the 250.1 to the other VC, will this work?
I personally wouldn't do it. Does the 500.5 have a seperate gain setting for the sub channel? If so then I would think it would work and suggest having both amps run through the same fuse.
FWIW. I think you would be fine trading the 8 for a 10 and not getting another amp. 250w would be plenty for a 10 in the vette. good luck
I installed an 8 in CDT subwoofer powered by an Alpine M450 (220 watt) amp and I think it provides more than adequate low end punch but I don't listen to rap or want to turn heads at the stop light and don't want my car to rattle apart from monster low frequency vibrations. You can see my setup at "DIY subwoofer" in this Forum. =JimmyZ78]Is a JL8W7 too small for a vette? I have MB Quart Prem's for mids and highs, JL8W7 and a JL500.5 amp. If you are considering getting another sub: i just talked to the reps at jl and he is running a 12w7 with a 500/1 and he says it's pushing it just fine, it's not underpowered at all.
I just replaced my Alpine 300 watt sub amp with a JL 250 / series and there is absolutely no comparing the difference. Absolutely unbelievable. It is like comparing a Kmart butter knife to a Schlenger knife.

just read this... not that wouldn't work. personally i wouldn't even do that if i had a two chan amp and running each chan to a voice coil. lets say that you set the gains exactly and have an oscilliscope and have both outputs with exactly the same voltage. everything is good and fine, but 6 months down the road one chan's components partially fail and it affects the output. now you are having each voice coil having different wattages and that will lead to premature speaker failure... thats asuming that both chans are from one sub. now when you introduce two amps (that aren't strappable) you are playing with fire.
on a related note that i found interesting; the w7's specs are supposed to be in such tight tollerances that if you push down on the cone you could feel friction if the force isn't evenly distributed.
