Install sub using existing middle well space on C5
I was talking to my installer friend here in Victoria, and he suggested using the middle compartment space for a subwoofer box. He said he could build a lip around the edges so that it would airtight and use dynamat or some other anti-resonating material just in case that would be a problem. There's a few other details to this but that's the jist of it. Just curious if anyone else has tried this and how it worked or didn't work.
My car is a 98 torch red coupe with a Kenwood cd head unit and 10 disk changer in left compartment, Alpine SPS-0829 and SPR-172B in front and SPR-172B in the back. I plan on using a 10" JL Audio sub, and driving everything with a Kenwood KAC 959 amp. I just want a clean and tight sounding system. Don't get me wrong, I love the mega systems, but I just want to keep it a little simpler this time. I appreciate any helpful comments.

That would be a very simple, yet effective, way to mount a sub baffle. I've seen that method used before. Just be sure the lip is secured with enough surface area that they won't come apart when the baffle is screwed down - perhaps 2"x2" lumber on 3 sides of the well. Rough up the both surfaces (lip lumber and body pan) and secure with Liquid Nails.
Dynamat on the interior of the well would be advised otherwise the body pan will resonate like crazy.
If you set the lip height correctly, your baffle should be flush with the remaining carpet/panels. Should look schweet!

Thank you C5 and Smash, yeah I've seen the stealth box for C5's and it is really nice, but I just didn't want to spend that much if I could help it. My friend Steven has done some mega systems ( 20K to 30K systems ) and I trust him, but I just wanted a little advice so we would only have to do this thing once. I got just what I needed from you guys, love the forum!!!

I just installed a JL W3 dual voice coil sub in the center compartment cover with no modifications of the compartment whatsoever except cutting the circle out of the cover for the sub. The thing rocks. Has a great seal. I cannot feel any air getting out around the carpet. It is obviously not airtight, but it will make the mirrors shake.
