Default Dilemma update

Ok,

I posted not too long ago about a problem I was having with my clarion system. It's three years old. I have clarion speakers/small amp, 6 disc changer and ARX7370 Head unit. I do like it..but the changer lately has been moody as to what CD's or CD-Rs it plays. Also when playing CD's the right side speakers at it seems cuts out like crazy. Sometimes it's fine, other times it's not. Tape player and tuner are PERFECT.(Weird)

Here's the situation... I went to Boomer McCloud. My body guy's brother works there, and likes Sony. He said my stuff is outdated...but still good, and I should go with a Sony Head unit, and CD changer specifically designed for CD-R's. I'd heard of a few that do play them easily. Remember, my stuff is 1998 tech...so I guess I need to step up. I was quoted $500 for a changer/head. Is that good? I also might go with Phoenix Gold Speakers for another $225. The clarity was UN REAL. I like highs and mids... I'm not a bass guy.

Lemme know!

Thanks.............

Sony is pretty bulletproof but they are known for having very little dynamic range for the price (lacking in highs, lows, and sterio seperation). Clarion, Kenwood, JVC and others are more known for being tempermental and having problems. You may want to also look at Alpine and or Pioneer. $500 is a decent price for a combo. What model numbers are you looking at? I don't know if you are interested in buying online or not. You can usually save substantially vs. buying at the store.
If you want good mids and highs you would want to get a pair of seperates. I would also listen to A/D/S, MB quart, Boston Acoustics, Focal, Diamond. These brands have seperates that are generally considered the best available. They all have setups in the PG price range. I would listen to them and compare them to the PG speakers. Buy the ones that sound the best to you as this is the most important thing. Bring your own CD, preferably one with a female vocals as these are the hardest to reproduce and will point out the weaknesses of the various speakers. I like the A/D/S 3 series myself. None of these or any other speakers like them are designed to make true low bass. They are designed to work in tandem with a subwoofer or 6x9 in the rear which makes the bass.

Here is a site with links to most of the more popular makers. You can find model numbers and compare prices on this site. Let me know if their are any other makers you are looking for.
